MEDINAH, Ill. – Year by year, the competition in Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying becomes more intense, and the older the competitor, the greater the pressure.
Even runners-up in the youngest age groups seem carefree after finishing. For most of those competitors, it’s a lark, and only their parents are nervous. But for a 15-year-old competing for a final chance to advance to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club, the heat is on – even on a breezy 70-degree day with nary a cloud in the sky.
Such was the case Saturday in the regional qualifier at Medinah Country Club. Just ask 15-year-old Alex Kim of Brookfield , Wis., who needed to sink his final putt, a curling right-to-left downhill 30-footer, to take the lead in the Boys 14-15 division.
Kim played the proper amount of borrow and the perfect quotient of speed, and saw the ball disappear a few minutes before sunset. The 25 points he earned for making the putt gave him 165 points overall, two more than runner-up Jackson Keizer of Orange City, Iowa.
“It’s kind of a relief,” Kim said of advancing. “I thought, ‘I’ve got to win it, that’s for sure. It’s (just) nine shots.’ The putt, I just aimed high and hit it kind of soft and let it drop in the hole. I thought it was going to go way past.”
Kim’s best drive was 294 yards, helping him take the lead in the first skill, but Keizer out-chipped him on the first green of Medinah’s treacherous No. 3 course, even though Kim holed one of his chips. That meant the division would be decided on the putting green, and while Keizer earned 20 points for stroking each of his last two putts within a foot, Kim came just as close for 20 points on his second and then drained the last.

Similar dramas played out across other divisions at Medinah. Among the most notable were a playoff for age-group honors in the Girls 7-9 division and the crowning of a back-to-back age-group winner in the Girls 14-15 division.
The playoff featured Eloise Fetzer of La Grange, Ill., who advanced from Medinah last year, and Adalyn Lupton of Waunakee, Wis. The two juniors finished the competition with 99 total points but returned to hit a single shot in each skill. Lupton qualified by a 19-17 margin, thanks largely to a big drive of some 150 yards.
“I hit drives 130 to 140 yards, typically, if they’re not downhill,” said Lupton, who finished third in last year’s Medinah regional. “That one was kinda downhill.”
I’m really excited to be able to do it. I’ve seen other people go and watched it on TV so many times, I can’t even believe I’m going.

The Boys 12-13 division seemed headed down to the wire before Ben Patel sunk his first putt on the way to piling up 60 points on the putting green. That sent the 13-year-old North Aurora, Ill., resident – who can be found on the first tee or the range at Black Sheep Golf Club near Sugar Grove, Ill., every day in the summer – to Augusta National.
“I probably play 100 rounds a year, but they’re not all 18,” Patel said. “But this is only nine shots."
Only nine shots, but with glory waiting at the end. So it was for the second year running for Martha Kuwahara of Northbrook, Ill., who advanced from the Girls 14-15 division. She finished T-9 in her age group in the National Finals last April, so this is a personal mulligan.
“I really want redemption from last year,” Kuwahara said. “I didn’t play my best because I was very nervous. There were thousands of people watching me, and it was nerve-wracking. My hands were shaking, and I couldn’t execute my shots the way I wanted to. But this year I feel I can do a lot better. I was nervous today, but my first drive, I whacked it 268 yards.

“I hit it a lot further now, maybe 30 yards, and I’m more accurate with my drives, and my putting has gotten a lot better than last year. That’s what dragged me down last year.”
If 7-year-old Emory Munoz of Lockport, Ill., was nervous, he never showed it, steadily increasing his point total from category to category. He built a lead in the Boys 7-9 division though driving and chipping, then matched the high total in putting to win going away. Munoz, who boasts, “I never took a lesson in my life,” practiced only 15 minutes the day before the competition but came away a champ.
“I can’t imagine what it’ll be like to be there,” Munoz said of traveling to Augusta National.
“It’ll be a really cool experience,” said first-time National Finalist Sophia Miller, 11, of Princeton, Iowa, the Girls 10-11 champion. “I’m really excited to be able to do it. I’ve seen other people go and watched it on TV so many times, I can’t even believe I’m going.”

Anna Bell of Poplar Bluff, Mo., comes from a competitive golf family. She has three older sisters on three different women’s college golf teams right now, so she knows what opportunities fine golf can present.
Bell won the Girls 12-13 division – the closest competition of the day – with 116 points, one more than co-runners-up Allison Guiser of Hartland, Wis., and Sara Kolar of St. Louis, with Hannah Ingersoll of Dyer, Ind., two points in arrears. Bell’s total of 45 points on the putting green made the difference.
“I’ve probably watched Drive, Chip and Putt every year,” Bell said. “I don’t know what it’ll be like, but I’ll be excited when I go.”
Then there was William Comiskey, who turns 11 on Tuesday. The Hinsdale, Ill., lad won the Boys 10-11 division with a steady showing in all three skills. Comiskey chipped to about two feet, three straight times, then pulled out of a tie with eventual runner-up Griffin Michalak of Wood Dale, Ill., in the putting competition.
“I love everything about this,” Comiskey said.
Pressure aside, just about everybody at Medinah did.

About the Finalists
Adalyn Lupton, 9, Waunakee, Wis., won a playoff over 2022 National Finalist Eloise Fetzer, 19-17. Lupton hit her playoff drive in the fairway while Fetzer missed the scoring grid.
“I put a lot of work into it, and I’m really happy to be going there. I’m going to thank my dad for taking me to practice every night for many months,” said Lupton. When she’s not practicing, she likes to spend the winter snowboarding.

Emory Munoz, a 7-year-old from Lockport, Ill., plays out of Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, former site of the PGA Tour’s Western Open/BMW Championship. Munoz pulled away from runner-up Rayan Patel of Bloomingdale, Ill., in the Boys 7-9 division on the putting green, where Munoz scored 50 points.
“It’s going to be a pretty good challenge,” Emory said of the National Finals.

Sophia Miller, 11, of Princeton, Iowa, has two older sisters, Rachele and Allison, who played golf at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Miller sank two of three putts for 65 of her 134 points to beat Lola Appleby of Mequon, Wis., by three points in the Girls 10-11 division.
“I really liked when I started hitting my driver good,” Miller said. “The first one I did not hit good. And when I made the 30-footer, I was really excited.”

William Comiskey, of Hinsdale, Ill., competed in the Drive, Chip and Putt regional three days before turning 11 and hoped to receive a couple of NBA jerseys as birthday gifts. He is unrelated to the Comiskey family that once owned the White Sox but lives a mile away from them.
Comiskey, winner of the Boys 10-11 division, made up ground in the overall competition by scoring 50 points on the putting green. He said he saw Drive, Chip and Putt on TV and imagined himself doing it in real life – and now he will.
“My favorite player is Jack Nicklaus,” Comiskey said. “I like the ‘Golden Bear’ (logo) and I like how he hit all his irons in his bag, and he’s nice and is a good father to his kids.”

Anna Bell, 11, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., has three sisters in college golf now: Sarah Bell (Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla.), Taryn Overstreet (Drury University in Springfield, Mo.) and Ella Overstreet (Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill.).
Anna Bell scored 45 points in the putting skill to pull a point ahead of co-runners-up Sara Kolar of St. Louis and Allison Guiser of Hartland, Wis., who had 36 and 35 points in putting, respectively.
“I’m really excited to take my dad to Augusta,” Bell said. “He’s always helping me. I’ve held a club since I was 2. I like golf because of all the experiences and the people you meet.”

Ben Patel, 13, North Aurora, Ill., qualified for the National Finals on his second attempt. Patel overcame a 20-point deficit by making his first putt for 25 points and scoring 35 more points on his last two putts.
“I think the main thing is the chips,” Patel said. “If you do well in chipping, you’ll be pretty solid. … My brother Luke made it to regionals last year and got second, and he was here this year too (and finished eighth in Boys 10-11). We’re going to go home and celebrate this.”

Martha Kuwahara, 14, of Northbrook, Ill., advanced to the National Finals in 2022 and tied for ninth in the Girls 14-15 age division at Augusta National. At Medinah, Kuwahara built a 19-point lead after two rounds by hitting a drive as far as 268 yards and hitting three chips within 2 feet.
“Drive, Chip and Putt is very different from an actual tournament,” she said. “You can’t recover from any shot, so any one shot is very important. It’s more nerve-wracking than an actual tournament, so I actually enjoy that."

Alex Kim, 15, of Brookfield, Wis., plays out of Brown Deer Park Golf Course, the former home of the Greater Milwaukee Open.
Kim sank his 30-foot putt to edge Jackson Keizer of Orange City, Iowa, by two points. Keizer’s putt from that distance rolled to within a foot of the hole.
“The difference between watching Drive, Chip and Putt on TV and being there will be nerves,” Kim said. “Mainly nerves. You’ve just got to keep calm.”
