SCARSDALE, N.Y. – They came from as far away as New Brunswick, in Canada’s Maritime Provinces, and as nearby as Bronxville, a nine-minute drive, to vie for one of junior golf’s most coveted prizes: A chance to compete at Augusta National.
A total of 96 players put their skills to the test at Quaker Ridge Golf Club on Sunday in the final Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier. Only the winner in each of the four girls and four boys divisions would advance to the National Finals on April 4, 2027, the eve of Masters week.

Not only was there so much at stake, but the conditions proved challenging as overcast skies gave way to a drizzle that developed into a steady, soaking rain. Players took out their rainsuits, and parents opened umbrellas. Each competitor received a scorecard in a sealed Ziploc bag.
The rain dampened the turf but not the contestants’ spirits. Lily DelPreore of Ramsey, N.J., managed to hole not just one or two of her putts but all three to capture the Girls 7-9 title. She won by 38 points, the largest margin of victory in any of the eight divisions.
After sinking the first two putts, from 6 and 15 feet, she studied her final one, a 30-footer.
“It was almost a double breaker,” DelPreore said. “It looked like it was sloping left to right, but I just aimed a little to the left, almost straight at it.”
After making her stroke, she had high hopes. “It either was just going to lip out, I thought, or it was going to drip in,” she said. “It went in.”
Her father, Matt, looked on with elation. Each time he watches Lily compete, he said, he marvels at her concentration.
“She keeps golf fun in the house and at practice,” he said, describing how Lily sometimes practices chipping by hitting shots over their dog, a pit bull mix named J.J. “And then when it’s time to compete, she turns it on – complete focus and discipline and the game face goes on.”
In the Boys 7-9 division, Joey Roach summoned similar resolve. Despite having traveled 11 hours by car two days earlier with his family from their home in Rothesay, New Brunswick – driving through Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut and into New York – he surged to victory by making his first two putts and nearly making his third.
“I feel like I play better when I get nervous,” said Roach, who learned to play the game from his mother, Kristi, a PGA of Canada professional.

For the day’s oldest players – those who will be 15 in April, the maximum age for competing in Drive, Chip and Putt – the qualifier was their last chance to reach the National Finals and get the opportunity to perform in front of Masters champions, cheering patrons and a television audience.
Chloe Zhang of Short Hills, N.J., was competing in the event for the fourth time, never having advanced to Augusta National. Going into Sunday, she considered her chances of breaking through this time to be slim to none. She had played against many of her peers in the Girls 14-15 division and knew their games to be strong.
“I literally looked at the field, and I was, like, ‘Oh, I’m cooked,’ ” she said.
To her surprise, she prevailed, winning the putting competition and scoring high enough in driving and chipping (despite hitting her first chip thin and watching it go past the hole) to author an eight-point victory.
“I actually can’t believe it,” Zhang said.

William Lachance, competing in the Boys 12-13 group, has entered Drive, Chip and Putt every year since becoming eligible at age 7. He had never made it to a regional, the third stage of qualifying, until this year.
His older brother, Connor, was also competing on Sunday, in the Boys 14-15 division. The pair, from Sterling, Mass., practiced together in the weeks leading up to the regional. William credited Connor, whose age group went ahead of his, with guiding him through the event.
“It’s wet, it’s raining, so just keep the drive in play, and, you know, the chip, it’s pretty straightforward,” he remembered his brother telling him. Despite the rain, “he said the greens were fast.”
William stepped up and sank his first putt en route to winning his division by two points. Connor, who has played in two U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C., finished fifth in his.
“He made it to worlds, and now I’m making it to Augusta,” William said.
About the Finalists
Lily DelPreore likes to practice her chipping at home in Ramsey, N.J., by hitting shots over her dog, a pit bull mix named J.J. She planned to celebrate her victory in the Girls 7-9 division by having ice cream and giving J.J. two new bones.

The Boys 7-9 winner, Joey Roach, has had one swing coach in his life: his mother, Kristi, a PGA of Canada instructor. On the course, he gets some advice from his father, Jason, too, an accomplished amateur player. Their golf season is short in Rothesay, New Brunswick – on a good year, running from late April to mid-October – but they make the most of it.

Girls 10-11 winner Ramona Du loves to watch Nelly Korda and hopes to become a professional golfer herself one day.
“She’s so confident, she doesn’t get mad when she hits a bad shot, and she’s so nice to all the fans,” Du, of Fort Lee, N.J., said of her hero. After advancing to the National Finals, Du said, “I’m just out of words because it’s so exciting.”

During the putting competition, the competition’s final stage, Trevor Whitford of Byfield, Mass., knew he had to gain ground to stand a chance of winning the Boys 10-11 division. He missed his first putt, and before attempting the second, remembered a piece of advice about dealing with pressure from PGA Tour winner Alex Fitzpatrick, who addressed the competitors via Zoom the day before.
“He said a lot of people think of me funny for this, but to stay in the moment, think of a color and try and find as much of it as you can,” Whitford explained. He chose orange and found examples of it among the turning trees and in a directional line drawn on his ball. He proceeded to hole his second putt and earn his ticket to Augusta National.

The qualifier’s closest contest came in the Girls 12-13 division, as Lyla Chong of Stamford, Conn., won by a single point. Chong’s favorite player is Lydia Ko, whose work ethic she admires. Chong and her family have gotten to know Golf Channel host Rich Lerner, a fellow member at Rockrimmon Country Club.
“He’s a big fan of hers, and we’re big fans of his,” said her father, Michael.

William Lachance, the Boys 12-13 winner, has entered Drive, Chip and Putt every year since age 7, but had never advanced to a regional qualifier until this year. On Sunday, he punched his ticket to the National Finals at Augusta National on the strength of his putting. He began by holing the first putt, from 6 feet.
“I didn’t know I could make it this far,” said Lachance, of Sterling, Mass., noting that he was grateful his family was there to see him prevail. “I always wanted to go to Augusta. I’m just excited.”

Chloe Zhang of Short Hills, N.J., winner of the Girls 14-15 age group, said that one of the things she loves most about golf is the variety of its playing fields compared to those of other sports.
“In soccer and basketball, you know there are going to be two goals and two hoops and the dimensions are going to be the same,” she said. “In golf, there are different layouts at every course. There could be water, there could be bunkers, and also the grass can be different. It’s just so different.”

Robbie Mullin of New Milford, Conn., who won the Boys 14-15 title, said his favorite professional golfer is three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, who won the Masters in 2015.
Asked what he would say to Spieth if given the chance to meet him in April at Augusta National, Mullin said, “I’d just tell him I love watching him and good luck that week.”
