Ford Noel of Virginia Beach, Va., for example, earned his first trip to the National Finals. Meanwhile, Alexandra Phung of Forest Hills, N.Y., qualified for the National Finals for a fifth and final time.
These were just two stories that stood out across several hours of competition at Laurel Valley.
In the Boys 14-15 age group, Jonathan Thomas authored a long-awaited breakthrough by earning his first trip to Augusta National after winning his local qualifier a half dozen times.
Thomas won both the driving and putting skills at the regional on his way to compiling 145 total points.
“I’m feeling great. It’s been a dream of mine for a long time, and I am just excited that I get to go,” he said, beaming. “I just had to focus on the process, do my routine and that kind of helped calm me down. It was just joy and happiness that I get to do this and it’s such a great opportunity. “
Thomas’ Drive, Chip and Putt journey began at age 7, and upon finding out he had won his age group, the Landenberg, Pa., native flashed a wide smile.
Moments after Phung secured her record-setting fifth National Finals appearance, her father, Tam, proudly produced a photo showing the Phung family’s friend, the late legendary football coach Lou Holtz, wearing a Phung hat. Holtz and Alexandra connected over the course of her repeated trips to Augusta National.
Phung’s latest triumph occurred amid slightly different details. Under normal circumstances, Phung attempts to qualify in her home state of New York, however a scheduling conflict brought her to Laurel Valley.
Phung secured her age group title by scoring 51 points in the drive competition and sinking her first putt. The 65 points she scored in putting matched the highest total in that discipline across all eight age groups at Laurel Valley.

“I’m super excited and really grateful for this opportunity,” Phung said. “To be able to hopefully bring some of my fans and my family back to Augusta National is going to mean the world to me, especially this being my last year, I’m just glad that I have this opportunity again. I’m very proud of myself. Personally, I try not to look at the title too much and I just try to enjoy the experience every time.”
Phung stuck around to watch her friend Jackson Logan, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., earn his second National Finals appearance. Despite not winning any of the three skills, Logan’s total score of 149 points allowed him to win the Boys 12-13 division by 27 points, the largest margin of victory on the day.
Logan also qualified for the 2025 National Finals by winning the Boys 10-11 age group at The Ridgewood Country Club regional qualifier in Paramus, N.J., in 2024. On Saturday, he was comforted by each of his three drives landing inside the grid. He also made his putt from 15 feet.
“The thing that helped me most getting through this year was how I knew what the nerves were going to be like in the regional because I experienced it two years ago, making it to Augusta,” he said. “It’s tough because when you step over the ball, you think, ‘I’ve only got nine shots, but I know that the nine shots matter, so give it my all on them.’”
In the Girls 12-13 age group, Avery Park of New York City and Olivia Ho of Glenwood, Md., faced a 15-foot tiebreaking putt to determine who would advance to the National Finals. Park triumphed to qualify for Augusta National for the first time in her second attempt at regional qualifying.
Park’s highest point total came in chipping, where she earned 50 points. Since she resides in the city, she doesn’t get to practice her chipping as much but considers it her favorite of the three skills.
In the Boys 10-11 age group, Lucas Dunaway advanced to the National Finals for the second time in the past three years.

The Troy, Va., native buried his first putt en route to winning the putt skill with 50 points. He won his age group by a single point over Edouard Marchand of Quebec.
Dunaway previously advanced to the 2025 National Finals from the regional qualifier at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., and finished seventh at the Laurel Valley regional a year ago.
“I learned about the speed of the greens, and the first year I completely messed up in putting so this year I adjusted to that,” Dunaway said.
Two years ago, Eleanor Lee of Rockville, Md., was close to punching her ticket to the National Finals and determined that with hard work, she might be able to do just that.
Those words proved to be prophetic. Lee scored 131 total points in the Girls 10-11 age group, enough to get the job done.
Noel, the Boys 7-9 winner, made a 10-hour drive to Laurel Valley from his home in Virginia Beach, Va. Capturing the regional title in his first Drive, Chip and Putt appearance certainly made the trip seem worth it.
From the very beginning, Noel was determined to win, and his experience taught him about focusing. He had the words “dominate” and “confident” written on his glove.

After scoring 45 points to win the putting skill, his dad hugged him, saying he had put himself in contention. Noel’s grandfather was recording all of the action.
Ultimately Noel’s maiden Drive, Chip and Putt experience has been a resounding success. He said he likes that each skill features three attempts.
Mia Seifert of Germantown, Md., was the final age group winner of the day. She got off to a quick start by scoring 36 points in driving and earned 106 total points to win the Girls 7-9 division by four.
This is the second year that Laurel Valley, a venue synonymous with Arnold Palmer, has hosted regional qualifying. Christopher McKnight, head golf professional at Laurel Valley, has spent 40 years in golf, and more than 38 of them at Laurel Valley. He expressed just what the day meant as a whole.
“These young kids are just the epitome of what we do in golf and as a PGA professional to try and grow the game. I can’t think of anything better that I have ever done other than hosting this event,” he said. “I can tell you one thing, that the future of golf with these young kids is in really good hands. It’s an honor for us to do it here at the Club and an honor for me to be involved.”
About the Finalists
Mia Seifert of Germantown, Md., walked off the putting green concerned that she had not done enough to secure the Girls 7-9 title and anxiously awaited the results with her mother.
As each subsequent score was posted, she became more confident and the smile started to return.
Her 45 points in putting proved enough to tip the division in her favor, a prospect that the shy Seifert was “happy and excited” about.
***
Ford Noel’s nine shots in the Boys 7-9 age group can best be summarized by the word dominate, which was visible on his golf glove.
“Dominate means try to be yourself and try to win,” he said. “I wanted to write that on my glove for those two reasons.”
After the regional qualifier, Noel was headed back home to Virginia Beach, Va., because the very next morning he had a lacrosse game.
***
Eleanor Lee of Rockville, Md., admitted she did not feel her best prior to Saturday’s regional, but focused in and made each of her first two putts.
She entered that skill with the mindset of being able to accumulate points with her putter. This turned out to be a good strategy for the Girls 10-11 age group winner.
“I was really happy that I could make the 15-footer,” she said. “I think I did really good controlling my speed.”
***
For Lucas Dunaway, the chance to return to Augusta National could not have been more exciting as he raved about how, when he first competed in the 2025 National Finals, everything was better than what he saw on television.
At Laurel Valley, Dunaway, of Troy, Va., saved his best effort for putting. He made his first putt on the way to scoring 50 points in that skill.
“I like how it brings people together and how it helps you feel very emotional and happy about what you’ve done,” he said of the Drive, Chip and Putt community.
***
Avery Park of New York City had to do a quick reset upon learning that she would enter a tiebreaker and face a 15-foot putt to advance.
Three years ago, Park fell short of qualifying for the National Finals by a single point, and she was determined to turn her story around.
After Park and Olivia Ho struck their tiebreaking putts, Park confirmed to her parents that she had won and they celebrated.
“I was just trying my best, I wanted to forget about before and just try to do my best either if I won or lost,” Park said.
***
Jackson Logan’s history as a golf fan began when Bubba Watson, a two-time Masters champion, gave Logan a ball at age 3.
Logan’s past Drive, Chip and Putt experience (he competed in the 2025 National Finals) led him to understand the value of patience and letting the points come instead of being overly aggressive with his driver.
The result?
“I started off by hitting all three drives in the grid,” said Logan, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “(I) built off that in chipping, focused after a tough first chip and did what I could with putting. All good skills, not too tough but pressure gets to you.”

Alexandra Phung of Forest Hills, N.Y., a Drive, Chip and Putt veteran, totaled an impressive 156 points on Saturday, winning the driving and putting competitions. Phung was a National Champion in 2023 (Girls 10-11) and 2025 (Girls 12-13). A third national title would break her out of a tie with Alexa Pano, Treed Huang and Yana Wilson.
Despite her experience, Phung admittedly felt nerves on her first drive, but she settled in and put the day in perspective: A few more shots remained and then she could put the day behind her.
This was Phung’s first time in Pennsylvania, and she took home a special gift of an Arnold Palmer umbrella pin after her historic age group win.
“I just know how much this place meant to Arnold (Palmer) and I met some fans out here and (I was given) this pin right after my win was official. I’m just so blessed to be able to get to wear his pin and to be able to play in a place Arnold loved.”

As Jonathan Thomas of Landenberg, Pa., stood on the tee for his opening drive, nerves got the better of him, and he accidentally knocked the ball off the tee with his hand.
However, driving is his favorite skill and Thomas recovered by landing all three drives in the grid. That helped him on his way to fulfilling a dream.
“(Regionals are) definitely different,” Thomas said. “Higher-level competition, harder putts, chips and it was just a great experience, a great course. I just had to focus on the process, do my routine and that kind of helped calm me down.”
