COLUMBUS, Ohio – It’s not difficult for participants in the Great Lakes region of the Drive, Chip and Putt to gain inspiration at historic Scioto Country Club.
Members welcomed them on the eve of the competition with a reception and a tour of the clubhouse, which is filled with memorabilia chronicling the exploits of Bobby Jones, hometown hero Jack Nicklaus and the winning 1931 U.S. Ryder Cup team. They also were treated to a video message from the Golden Bear, who learned the game at Scioto. During the driving portion of the competition, players teed off not far from the spot where Nicklaus, the 18-time major winner, hit his first golf ball when he was 10 years old.
Perhaps that explains some of the sensational scoring and the historically fierce, top-notch competition at Saturday’s regional qualifier.
Consider what transpired in four of the eight age categories, each decided in a playoff, which consists of a 15-foot putt. If neither player sinks the putt, points are awarded based on the ball’s proximity to the hole.

“Given our history here at Scioto and how much we’ve been involved in major championships and having the greatest golfer who ever played grow up at Scioto, it’s special for these kids to get to be here and be a part of it, and it’s special for us to host them,” said Greg Wolf, Scioto’s general manager. “Hopefully they’ll take something from this day that will help them with their golf going forward.”
I’ve always dreamed about this, but I never thought it would happen.
Brycen Tisch
Brycen Tisch of Zionsville, Ind., was the winner of the Boys 14-15 age group and Nikitha Suresh of Plain City, Ohio, won the Girls 14-15 age group, both in a playoff. In the Boys 10-11 division, Flynn Lewis of Pepper Pike, Ohio, also advanced to the National Finals next April at Augusta National Golf Club via a playoff.
Lewis, 10, is the grandson of the late Bob Lewis, a standout amateur player who competed in seven Masters Tournaments and three U.S. Opens. Lewis, who died in 2021, also was a four-time player for the U.S. Walker Cup team and twice served as captain.
Perhaps the most dramatic finish came in the Girls 10-11 division and featured past Girls 7-9 National Finalists from the previous two years, Calista Han who qualified in 2021 and Kylie Miller, who punched her ticket to Augusta a year ago at Scioto. After Han and Miller scored 104 points apiece, their playoff wasn’t decided until the second extra putt when Han scored 20 points to Miller’s 10. Each girl sunk the 15-footer on her first attempt, with Han having to follow Miller’s holed putt with her own.
“I just knew I had to make it,” Han, of Lewis Center, Ohio, said of her first putt. “I’ve been working hard on my chipping and putting.”

Tisch and Hogan O’Keefe of Collierville, Tenn., scored 154 points each in the Boys 14-15 competition, but Tisch clinched the victory by sinking his first playoff putt. Brady Barnum of Dublin, Ohio, a National Finalist in 2018, finished third, just five points behind.
“I’ve always dreamed about this, but I never thought it would happen,” said Tisch, whose close friend Elijah Lemmon, a fellow Hoosier, advanced to Augusta National last year out of Scioto. “I have a picture of hole 12 at Augusta hung up in my room, and now it’s come true that I’m going. That place is so special, and to be able to step foot there will be amazing.”
In the Girls 14-15 division, Suresh was a winner over Abigail Caine of Versailles, Ky., after the two tied at 135. Suresh scored 20 points in the playoff, missing her putt by mere inches, then watched as Caine’s ball lipped out on the high side of the hole and spun a foot away, scoring 10 points. Lyla Hampton of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., who won last year’s Girls 14-15 division at Scioto, missed the playoff by one point.
“I was thinking about the back of the cup. I was trying to make it. I didn’t make it, but I hit a good putt,” said Suresh, who turns 14 in November and was competing in Drive, Chip and Putt for the first time in four years. “I was nervous, but now I am really excited. When I won, I was really happy.”

Lewis and Abram Baldridge of Virgie, Ky., each scored 131 points to set up their showdown in the Boys 10-11 division. Neither player converted the playoff putt, but Lewis got his closer to score 20 points to Baldridge’s 15. Again, the third-place finisher missed the playoff by one point as Micaiah Lewis of Delaware, Ohio, fell just shy.
“I felt like I had a pretty good chance today and felt confident,” said Lewis, who is advancing to Augusta National on his third attempt. “I feel like it’s going to be a great experience to go to Augusta.”
Cole Layow won the Boys 12-13 age group in yet another nail biter. With a victory in the chipping portion, Layow, of Nicholasville, Ky., scored 150 points and edged Bentley Coon of Horton, Mich., by a point. Karis Reid, of Carmel, Ind., topped the Girls 12-13 division with 143 points while also taking the first-place medal in driving.

Defying the theme of close contests, Lucy Wiertel of Oswego, Ill., won impressively in the Girls 7-9 group, taking first place in each of the three disciplines to punch her ticket to Augusta National by scoring 132 points and registering a 36-point victory.
“This has been my dream since I was five years old,” said Wiertel, 9. “Now that I finally won it, I’m just so happy.”
In the Boys 7-9 division, Preston Tolnar of Canfield, Ohio, scored 55 points to win the chipping skill on the way to claiming a National Finals berth with 120 points, seven ahead of Brooks Rayburn of Ithaca, Mich.
Han was one of seven past National Finalists in the field but the only one to gain another trip to Augusta National. Six players who competed last year at Scioto returned.

About the Finalists
Brycen Tisch, of Zionsville, Ind., got started in the game at 18 months old when his father, Bryan, put a plastic club in his hand. His favorite golfer is “either Jordan Spieth or Justin Thomas.” He likes driving the best and wants to be a professional golfer and play on the PGA Tour when he grows up. Tisch’s coach is Brad Fellers at Prairie View Golf Club, who runs the Golf School of Indiana. “I’ve only had a few lessons, but he has made me a better golfer,” Tisch said. He also has a mental coach, Colby Huffman, who is the head men’s golf coach at Butler University.

Nikitha Suresh, of Plain City, Ohio, is an eighth grader whose favorite golfer is Annika Sorenstam. Suresh’s favorite skill is putting. Her father introduced her to golf at age 7. “I liked it, so I just kept playing it,” she said. “I didn’t think I’d make it this far, but I did.” Suresh, who turns 14 in November, hadn’t competed in Drive, Chip and Putt for four years but tried this year because she would be in the oldest category. She planned to celebrate later with ice cream and said she is excited to meet all the players when she gets to Augusta National.

Cole Layow, of Nicholasville, Ky., wants to be a professional golfer when he grows up. Layow and his family are members at Keene Trace Golf Club, site of the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship. Layow’s favorite golfer is J.T. Poston, who once signed his hat and gave it to Layow. “Just looking forward to being at Augusta,” Layow said. Layow’s father Matt introduced him to golf at age 6, and Layow’s coach is Eric Geldhof. A seventh grader at Lexington Christian Academy, Layow was competing in a middle school regional golf tournament, which is the step before the state tournament, the day after his Drive, Chip and Putt regional.

Karis Reid, of Carmel, Ind., started playing golf at age 6. Her favorite golfer is Nelly Korda, and she likes driving the best. “I liked it the moment I hit my driver because it goes the farthest,” she said. Reid wants to play on the LPGA when she grows up. “I was a little nervous thinking about going to Augusta National, but I knew God has a plan for me. I’ve never been to Augusta before. I’ve never been on TV before,” she said. Reid has friends who have competed in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National, and she is looking forward to seeing the Hogan Bridge. Her father Chard is a high school golf coach at Carmel High School, “so I always grew up with golf.” The 143 total points she scored at Scioto was the best score in her four tries at Drive, Chip and Putt.

Flynn Lewis, of Pepper Pike, Ohio, learned the game from his father, Tristan, who played collegiate golf at Georgetown, and grandfather, Bob Lewis, who played in the Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open and was a two-time captain and four-time member of the U.S. Walker Cup. Flynn’s favorite golfer is Justin Thomas and he likes putting the best “because when I make it, it’s a great feeling.” He enjoys hitting bunker shots the most of any shot and is looking forward to meeting the players in Augusta and seeing the course, “because the course is really cool.”

Her favorite golfer is Rose Zhang. “I’m really happy about going back,” she said of the 2024 National Finals. “I liked the putting and how fast the green was there. Saw Tiger Woods, which was pretty awesome.” Han’s father Frank and a family friend introduced her to golf. She practiced mostly chipping and putting to prepare for the regional, and her goal for her return to Augusta National is to play better.

Preston Tolnar, of Canfield, Ohio, said his favorite golfer is Phil Mickelson “because he’s nice, and he wins some tournaments every once in a while.” Tolnar likes chipping the best, and he wants to play on the PGA Tour when he grows up. Tolnar was really nervous for the Drive, Chip and Putt regional because he really wanted to go to Augusta National. Now he’s looking forward to meeting Mickelson and the other players in the Masters. Tolnar’s father Brian, Director of Golf at Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman, Ohio, introduced him to the game when he was 6 years old.

Lucy Wiertel, of Oswego, Ill., began playing golf at age 2, hitting balls at an indoor golf dome. She wants to be a professional golfer when she grows up, and her favorite golfer is Florida State player Luke Clanton, whom she met at the practice range. Wiertel’s father Jason, who introduced her to golf, caddied for Clanton when he won the 2022 North & South Amateur. Wiertel likes putting the best, though she is stronger at chipping and driving. “If you don’t have your putting, you’re not going to play too well, but if you have your putting, you will play amazing,” she said. She is looking forward to seeing the golf course “and seeing the beautiful Augusta National.” Going to Augusta has been my dream since I was five years old. Now that I’ve finally won it, I’m just so happy.”
