CHASKA, Minn. – The first golfer off Hazeltine National’s blustery first tee Sunday morning at Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying also became the first player on site to play her way to Augusta National Golf Club for next spring’s National Finals.
Colorado’s Sophia Eagan comfortably won the Girls 7-9 age division, even though she’s only 6.
Eagan, who will turn 7 by the time the National Finals are contested next April, might have outdone her parents as well by negotiating a stop at the Mall of America to ride the rollercoasters before the flight home to Castle Rock, Colo., to find the fifth member of their family: a puppy.
“We told her if she did really well here, she can get a dog,” her mother, Anya, said. “So when we get home, we‘ll have to go to the breeder and pick a puppy.”
They’re thinking miniature Goldendoodle.
“She wants to name her dog Augusta,” Anya said.

When asked about her goals for a career that is just starting, Sophia – who carries a putter head cover emblazoned with the words “Game Over” – lists a lofty one: She wants to eventually play in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur the week before the Masters Tournament.
Sophia has two older brothers. Jacob, who just turned 12, reached the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals in 2023, but lost the Boys 7-9 title in a playoff.
Now Jacob’s little sister is following in his footsteps, with a putter and a short game that outscored everybody else in her age division on Sunday. She holed two of three putts in the putting competition, which was a game-changer.

“We’ve been through this journey before,” Anya said. “All our kids love golf. They pick it up naturally, just as they learn to walk. That’s where we spend our time as a family.”
Sophia and her father, Jason, spent a fleeting moment together after Sunday’s regional qualifier. They hugged each other tightly before Sophia asked, “Are you crying, Dad?”
He later called them tears of joy.
“We had so much fun two years ago,” Jason said. “It’s an experience of a lifetime. We travel the country. She was 4. She says she doesn’t remember any of it. Now she’ll get to drive down Magnolia Lane again and compete herself.”
Sophia will do so with friend Shepherd Choi, who earned one of eight available spots in next year’s Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals by winning the Girls 10-11 division on Sunday. Both players live in the Denver suburbs and have played together in the U.S. Kids Golf program.
“We’re so happy for each other,” Choi said of their joint celebration on Sunday.

Both golfers advanced through a local and subregional qualifier to reach Sunday’s regional qualifier. The field included golfers from across the Midwest – from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado to Missouri and Kansas.
Minnesota also fielded plenty of players, including the three Martin sisters from Park Rapids. Maddison competed in the Girls 7-9 age group while Isabella competed in the Girls 12-13 division and Natalie in the Girls 14-15 division.
Natalie has reached Augusta National twice for the National Finals – in 2022 and 2023. This is the first time all three have reached a regional qualifier, but none of the sisters moved on to the National Finals.
“When you’ve made it there before, the nerves, the expectations are high,” their mother, Rachael, said. “We live on the course. They practice together. It’s an activity they like to do together.”

This time, the Martin sisters and the rest of the field played through gusting winds typical at Hazeltine National as well as dappled sunshine and a brief rain shower that came down just after the first groups teed off.
“The hardest part of the day is holding onto the scorecard,” said Jeff Drimel, first-tee starter and CEO of the Minnesota PGA Section. “I already see someone chasing one.”
While some qualifying sites use their driving range for the driving competition, golfers at Hazeltine National teed off on the same first tee that the game’s greats have strolled for the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and other major professional and amateur championships.

This marked the second consecutive year Hazeltine has hosted regional qualifying.
“We want them to experience all of Hazeltine National,” said Lukas Dreger, the club’s chief membership and heritage officer. “Our mission is to hold major championships, and we consider this a championship like all the others.”
In fact, Hazeltine’s motto is, “Where Champions Walk.”
“It was so cool,” said Girls 14-15 champion Peyton Landon, who lives in Fort Collins, Colo. “Yesterday we had a walk-through and it kind of felt like memory lane. We saw the Ryder Cup stuff. It was really cool. All the champions have walked here.”

About the Finalists
Boys 7-9 winner Maxwell Kochtanek’s birthday is April 4. That’s one day before the Kansas City-area kid will compete at Augusta National the weekend before the Masters Tournament.
“We’ll be out there celebrating a couple things,” his father, Jeff, said.

Sunday’s regional qualifier was the second of a two-year agreement to bring Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying to Minnesota. Girls 7-9 champion Sophia Eagan was one of many who traveled from as far as Colorado to participate. The Eagans live in Castle Rock, Colo.
“This is an easy one,” Sophia’s mother, Anya, said. “Minnesota is basically just down the street.”

Boys 10-11 champion Miles Lunning and his family made the trek from Brandon, S.D., near Sioux Falls. Lunning beat Mason Dicken in a playoff when he hit his tiebreaking 15-foot putt closer to the hole. The thrilling finish capped off an impressive weekend of play for the young golfer.

Shepherd Choi began her day by winning the driving skill in the Girls 10-11 and went on to qualify for the National Finals in her division.
Choi’s father, Christian, is a Presbyterian pastor and said he decided to name his child Shepherd whether boy or girl as a reminder that “God is great.”

Jack Flynn is headed back to Augusta National from his Lincoln, Neb., home after he won the Boys 12-13 division on the strength of his chipping and putting. Flynn attended a Masters practice round as a patron with his dad and grandpa two years ago and met his favorite golfer, Bryson DeChambeau, there, too.

Desirae Larson will travel to Augusta National from her home in Kearney, Mo., with this in mind after winning the Girls 12-13 division: “Spend time with my family being there, making a memory.”

Minnesota’s own Ryder Bormes fueled up for his Boys 14-15 victory with a stop at Subway on his way to Hazeltine National and planned a trip to Culver’s. In between, he also went to his home course of Pheasant Acres near his Corcoran home to warm up.

Girls 14-15 winner Peyton Landon had a confession to make after traveling from Fort Collins, Colo., to Hazeltine National: “I don’t know how, I just knew, like, I’m going to Augusta. I just knew. Sometimes I just have a feeling this is going to be a good day.”
