For some of the competitors at Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco, golf is a game that’s deeply embedded in their DNA. A trip to Augusta National will be a satisfying next chapter for the whole family.
FRISCO, Texas – For the first time in Drive, Chip and Putt history, Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco hosted a regional qualifier. The Northern Texas PGA Section welcomed 111 junior golfers on Sunday, and all were hoping to earn their way to the National Finals at Augusta National on April 6, 2025.
While PGA Frisco provided an optimal setting for the high level of play, what really stood out on a Texas fall day was family support and legacies.

Athleticism and golf are in 9-year-old Blake Ayuso’s blood.
The fourth grader from Cypress, Texas, punched his ticket to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals by winning the Boys 7-9 age group with 146 total points. He gave credit to his mom, Nakia Davis, who became the first African American to play collegiate golf in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) when she competed for Vanderbilt from 1993-1996.
“When I was 2, my mom bought me a plastic set of golf clubs and I just played with them around the house,” Ayuso said.
Golf means a lot to our family but Drive, Chip and Putt especially because it provides an opportunity for kids to go to Augusta National. A lot of them probably would never get the opportunity to go there otherwise.

Now Ayuso competes in events on the Southern Texas PGA Junior Tour and U.S Kids Golf Tour and plans to become a professional golfer someday. More importantly, he loves to play with his family. His fivesome consists of his dad Julio, who played minor league baseball for the Minnesota Twins from 1994-1998; his older brother Andrew (11) and younger brother Carson (6); and of course, mom. They all recently returned from Pinehurst (North Carolina) Resort, where the boys competed in the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship.
Davis, who was inducted into the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame in 2017, loves that golf plays a major role in their family.

“I’m so proud of him because he worked really hard and he’s a very determined individual,” she said. “We don’t know what the future holds, but he’s also a good student, so I think that’s very important – to have a good balance.
“Blake comes from a long history of golfers, all trailblazers. Both my grandfathers played, my uncle was an All-American, my sister was the second African American to play in the SEC. I was at Vanderbilt and she was at Ole Miss. Just a long line of golfers who have stuck through the good times and the bad. Being here now, it kind of comes full circle.”
Since 2013, Drive, Chip and Putt has engaged thousands of youngsters in the game, whether they are picking up golf for the first time or competing with their peers around the country. For Natalia Velasquez, winner of the Girls 12-13 division, and her dad David, it means more than just another opportunity to play. It’s a program for the whole family.
“I started (playing golf) when I was 4,” said Velasquez, who wore an Augusta National polo her mom gave her for good luck. “I really started because of my brother. He’s a really big influence on me and we usually play together.”
Velasquez’s brother Sebastian, 17, came close to qualifying for the National Finals on multiple occasions.
“He’s going to be really excited for me,” Natalia added.
“Golf means a lot to our family,” said David, “but Drive, Chip and Putt especially because it provides an opportunity for kids to go to Augusta National. A lot of them probably would never get the opportunity to go there otherwise.”
David picked up the game later in life but wanted his kids to experience the game for the lessons learned along the way.
“You get what you put into it, and you don’t depend on other players,” he said. “That’s what I love about the game. You obviously have a support system, but it’s an individual sport and it’s so fulfilling. You learn great values like good etiquette, honesty and friendship.”

For 10-year-old Alaina Villarreal, the third time was the charm. The fifth grader from Richmond, Texas, finally broke through and punched her ticket to Augusta National after two previous close calls. This time, she won the Girls 10-11 age group by a 12-point margin.
“This is my third time trying to make it and I have been very close the other two times,” Villarreal said. “I’m just really excited I could make it this time.”
Many might feel discouraged after two near misses, but for Villarreal, they fueled the biggest lesson she’s learned through the game.
“Failure is a way to succeed,” she said. “I failed two other times at this tournament, and I just feel like that has really helped me continue and keep on going for this one.”
Love and support from family and friends propelled her forward.
“The best part about today was probably just my friends and family rooting for me on every single shot,” she said.
When asked who was more excited – Villarreal or her family – she didn’t shy away from saying her family. For her dad Jason, the day was especially meaningful.
“My dad passed away last year, and he wanted to watch her,” Jason said. “She missed just by a little bit last year and it hurt because he passed away a little bit after, but (Alaina) always said that she wanted to do it for him.”
Golf is a game that brings families together in more ways than one. The Villarreal family is experiencing that now.
Addie Quick of Tuscola, Texas, is competitive in nature, and competition is her favorite thing about golf. The fourth grader still knows how to stay cool under pressure, though.
“Golf has taught me how to be calm and not be so frustrated when I hit a bad shot,” she said.
Quick’s calm demeanor helped her score 114 points and a win in the Girls 7-9 division for the chance to compete where her favorite golfer, Tiger Woods, has created so many memorable Masters moments.
“I’m looking forward to play where all the pros play,” she said. “I am feeling so excited, I really want to thank my friends, family, God and my coaches.”
Like many, Quick’s golf journey began during COVID when sports options were limited. Initially, she was chipping in the backyard with her dad Joe.
“It just means everything to see it come true for her because you could tell she really wanted it,” Joe said. “She set her goals, set her practice schedules – balancing her homework – and she knew what she had to do. I’m proud of the work she put into it.”

Blake Ayuso of Cypress, Texas, won the Boys 7-9 division with a total of 146 points.
During the driving competition – his favorite of the three skills – he landed all three balls inside the grid and took first place in that category.
The 9-year-old also won the chip category, which helped settle his nerves.
“I was nervous to start, but I just kept going,” he said.
Ayuso’s favorite part of golf is the opportunity to meet new friends, which is what he’s looking forward to doing at Augusta National in April. As for his preparation?
“I’m going to focus on six-, 15- and 30-foot putts.”

Alaina Villarreal, of Richmond, Texas, loves putting – and it shows. She scored 50 of her 132 total points on the putting green and won the Girls 10-11 division to punch her ticket to the National Finals.
Villarreal has her sights on the LPGA tour when she’s older, but right now she can’t believe that she gets to compete on the 18th green at Augusta National, just like 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm, her favorite golfer.
“I’ve always wanted to go and it’s super exciting that I get to be on that same green.”

Dawson Dial’s favorite Drive, Chip and Putt category is putting, but after winning the Boys 10-11 division at Fields Ranch, he may want to change that to chipping. Holing his third and final chip at the regional qualifier made a big difference for Dial.
“I had 25 points (in that skill) going into that chip and I knew I needed to have a very good final chip for momentum heading into the putt,” the fifth grader explained. “I honestly thought I hit too hard, but it hit the pin and dropped.”
Dial, of Cedar Park, Texas, said his favorite golfer is Tiger Woods because “he has all the shots.” However, Woods is also known for his famous celebrations and Dial wasn’t afraid to follow suit with a fist pump once the chip dropped.
His strategy for finding momentum paid off as he went on to make two of three putts for a total of 70 points in that skill.
Dial will leave Frisco feeling ready for the National Finals with a strong short game and stable nerves.
“(Today) helped me get the nerves out and showed me that I'm good enough to do whatever I want.”

Natalia Velasquez, of El Paso, Texas, demonstrated the power of a strong short game on her way to winning the Girls 12-13 division. Only two of her three drives landed inside the grid and thus scored points, but she gained ground with 50 points in the chip skill and 60 in putting.
After two of her chips found the inner circle, she went on to drain the six-foot putt, nearly make the 15-footer and leave the third putt from 30 feet within a respectable distance.
“My favorite skill is probably chipping,” Velasquez said with the first-place medal around her neck.
Her lucky Masters shirt delivered, and she felt the most relief after her scorecard was turned in.
“The best part was really at the end, just knowing that I made it,” she said.
Like many players her age, golf isn’t her only sport. Velasquez plays volleyball for her school and balances practice, games and tournaments with her homework. She sticks to her schedule of going to the golf course every other day and focuses on one thing at a time.
When it comes to Drive, Chip and Putt, she does the same: “I just really like that you can stay focused on one skill at a time.”

After winning the Boys 12-13 division, Wyatt Basford didn’t know quite what to say.
“I’m kind of speechless right now,” Basford said. “I can't put it into words, to be honest.”
Basford’s favorite Drive, Chip and Putt skill is driving, and it showed. The seventh grader from Tuttle, Okla., scored 63 points, hitting each drive straight down the middle of the grid in the 250-to-280-yard range. Following the trend of the day, however, Basford used his short game to close the deal.
Basford made his six- and 30-foot putts and nestled his 15-foot putt within a foot of the hole. Overall, he earned 70 points in putting to finish strong.
“When it was about five feet from the hole, I knew it was in,” he said of his 30-foot attempt.
Basford plays basketball in addition to golf, but there are life lessons to be learned from golf that make the game stand out.
“In golf you don’t have to be fast. You don’t have to be strong. It doesn’t matter what you look like, you can do it.”
That’s the lesson that will take Basford to the National Finals at Augusta National. And as his favorite golfer Scottie Scheffler often says, results don’t determine who he is as a person.

Ava Frazier has now caught lightning in a bottle twice, but this time, she’ll get the full experience.
Frazier, an eighth grader currently living in Austin, Texas, experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as she won the Girls 14-15 division and qualified for the National Finals for the second time.
The first time she made it to Augusta National, she competed in the Girls 7-9 division. She qualified in 2019 but had to wait until 2021 to play.
“This means a lot to me because last time, I went during the COVID year so I didn’t get the full experience,” Frazier said. “I’m just really excited to be there again and meet a lot of new people.”
The most important lesson Ava has learned through golf is to never give up.
“Even if you think you didn’t do well, or that you’re not going to win, there’s still always a chance.
“(Today) I was pretty positive that I wasn't going to qualify,” she said.
Two strong drives, a close chip and two clutch putts made the difference for Frazier. She drained her six-foot putt and found the inner circle on her second putt, from 15 feet. She ended up winning her age group by a 10-point margin.

Andrew Bird, a ninth grader from Nacogdoches, Texas, had “as good of a day I could ever ask for.” In other words, three drives in the grid, consistent chipping all around, clutch putting and best of all, a ticket punched to the National Finals.
Bird scored a total of 170 points to claim the Boys 14-15 division and could hardly believe he was on his way to compete at Augusta National.
“I’m super excited and I’m just ready to go,” he said. “It’s a dream come true.”
With his entourage of family watching, he was ready for the opportunity. First, however, he reflected on how he got started in the game.
“My grandpa started everything,” he said. “I was about 3 (when I started golf).”
His favorite thing about the game is playing with his dad and grandpa.
“They just make it a fun experience and I just learn so much from them,” Bird said
Caddie honors might come down to a coin toss, but for now, Bird is proud of how he handled his nerves at PGA Frisco.
“When I first stepped on the tee, I was very nervous,” he said. “I just told myself to breathe and stay in my game, and I did that throughout the whole round.”
When he rolled his last putt into the 20-point ring, he had a feeling he was close to clinching his ticket.
His feeling was right. As for his celebration plans?
