Many of the eight Drive, Chip and Putt National Finalists at Aronimink Golf Club highlighted the joy this game brings them – and their delight at an impending trip to Augusta National.
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – The buzz in the western suburbs of Philadelphia became louder and louder on Saturday morning as the young contestants and their parents checked in for the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Aronimink Golf Club. The players divided their time between the three practice areas – the putting green in front of the clubhouse, the chipping area across the main driveway and the driving range at the end of the parking lot.
By the end of the day, eight participants had advanced to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, to be played at Augusta National Golf Club on April 7, 2024. It was a heartwarming experience watching the competitors, ages 7 through 15, continue to highlight the program’s mission of attracting even more boys and girls to the game.
“It’s a great honor for us to be able to host it and be a part of giving back to the game and growing the game,” Aronimink general manager Andrew Whitelaw said. “It’s really important for us to see the game growing, and to be the host venue for one of these is really great.
“It’s great to see all the kids enjoying themselves. The competition is really strong. It’s a big deal to get through so they’re all trying their hardest. We’re going to be hosting the PGA Championship in 2026 so for them to get a sneak peek at it, it’s great. You never know, one of them might even be playing in a few years.”

Colby Komancheck of Royersford, Pa., winner of the Boys 14-15 age group, echoed the sentiment.
“I think it’s a bright future,” Komancheck said. “I think this event will go on for a long, long time. It’s good to see these kids liking it now. I feel they’ll like it just as much when they’re my age. I say it like I’m old, but I hope they keep enjoying it. This event helps them grow.”
On a sunny, breezy day in Newtown Square, Komancheck posted a nearly perfect score in the driving skill to take the Boys 14-15 title with 151 points. Drives worth 23, 24 and 24 points – out of a possible 25 points –helped him earn a ticket to Augusta National.
“I wasn’t looking that great going into driving and then I capitalized on my drives and basically moved myself into the next round,” he said. “I think it’ll be a really, really cool experience at Augusta. I’m sure the drive in is as good as everyone says. I really can’t wait.”
I left a few shots out there, but the biggest thing today was my mental skills. I was just telling myself, ‘It’s OK, just take it one shot at a time, just focus on the shot in front of you. You can’t control what happened in the past, just focus on the present.'

The Swan family of North East, Pa., also had a great day as Keziah Swan won the chipping discipline on her way to victory in the Girls 10-11 age group. Drive, Chip and Putt has been a family affair for the Swans.
Keziah is looking to match her sister, Lydia, who won the National Finals in the same age group in 2015. Her brother Isaiah Swan also competed in the 2015 National Finals, finishing third in the Boys 10-11 age group, and her sister Anna Swan was fourth in the Girls 14-15 age group in the 2022 National Finals.
“I enjoy playing with them. It’s fun,” Keziah said. “They help me a lot since they’re older than me. It’s just helpful that you have older siblings that know a lot about golf.”
As for the next step in her Drive, Chip and Putt journey, she said, “I’m excited but I’m a little emotional. I’m looking forward to going to Augusta and seeing all the amazing places there.”

If there were an award for consistency at the Aronimink regional qualifier, it would go to Luke Gladfelter of Chesapeake Beach, Md., who won the Boys 12-13 age group with a total of 156 points, the most of any contestant in Saturday’s competition. He scored 50 points or higher in all three categories, with his 55 points in putting being the highest.
Gladfelter said the key to his day was having fun. It’s his favorite part of playing golf.
“It’s the fun of it – walking, getting to talk and meet new people on the golf course,” he said. “You’re not just talking to the same people over and over again. You get that but also you have some other people you’ve never seen, and you play with them and have fun with them.”
Kayley Roberts of Phoenixville, Pa., won the putting and driving skills and finished with 154 points to win the Girls 14-15 age group. She said she felt good with her game but even better with her mental approach.
“I left a few shots out there, but the biggest thing today was my mental skills,” she said. “I was just telling myself, ‘It’s OK, just take it one shot at a time, just focus on the shot in front of you. You can’t control what happened in the past, just focus on the present.’”
Ethan Jung of Fort Lee, N.J., the champion in the Boys 7-9 age group, appeared as if he were ready to tackle Augusta National on Saturday. Jung tallied 139 points by finishing first in putting, second in chipping and third in driving, all while wearing a green Masters shirt and matching Masters cap.
“I like the Masters,” he said. “I’m really excited to go to Augusta.”

In the Girls 12-13 age group, Maeve Anne Parker Roychoudhury of Leesburg, Va., won the driving and chipping skills en route to scoring 123 points and advancing to Augusta National.
Trebor Melendez of Vineland, N.J., finished second in putting and third in both driving and chipping to take the Boys 10-11 division with 115 points.
Trisha Lobo of Collegeville, Pa., claimed the Girls 7-9 age group title on the strength of her putting and chipping. She hit two of her three drives out of bounds but scored 10 points on the drive she landed in the grid and went on to seal the victory with the last two skills.
Colby Komancheck is a ninth grader at Malvern Preparatory School. He started playing golf as a two-year-old when his babysitter brought him a plastic set of clubs. His first Drive, Chip and Putt competition came at age seven, and he reached the second round. He said his favorite golfer is Jordan Spieth because “when I was starting to get into golf, he was winning a lot of tournaments. He was a main influence for me growing up.” His mom, Kelly, and dad, Jamie, are PGA professionals at RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve in Phoenixville, Pa., “They met at Aronimink and later had their wedding reception there,” Komancheck said. “They’ve given me anything I could ever ask for golf-related. They’ve provided me with endless opportunities and opportunities to get better and memorable opportunities as well.”

Kayley Roberts of Phoenixville, Pa., also comes from a golf family. In fact, when she was a freshman last season, she and her sister, Kate, a junior, led Phoenixville High School to the Pennsylvania Class 3A girls golf title. “We play a lot of golf together,” she said. “We’re big competitors whenever we’re practicing. We’re always testing our skill against each other. I try and beat her. She tries to beat me.” Her favorite player is Tiger Woods, and she also admires Rose Zhang, hoping she can someday follow in her footsteps as a winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Kayley’s father began teaching her the game when she was six or seven, and she soon began competing in U.S. Kids Golf tournaments and on the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour. She is pleased to have made the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals in her fifth try.

Luke Gladfelter of Chesapeake Beach, Md., learned golf from his father and practices often with his two older brothers. His favorite golfer is Tiger Woods. He plays most of his golf at two Maryland public courses, Lake Presidential and Chesapeake Hills. He said that while he likes all three skills that make up Drive, Chip and Putt, he prefers the driving portion and liked the way he hit the ball on Saturday. He also likes playing Wiffle ball with his friends. Asked if he dreams about Augusta National and the Masters, he said he did, and added, “Maybe one of these days I’ll be there … and I will.”

Maeve admitted to being a little jealous back then but now says, “I made it and she made it, so we’re kind of even.” She said her favorite golfer is John Daly. “I like the outfits that he wears because they’re kind of interesting. My Dad says in a way, we have similar personalities. I get upset if I hit a bad shot.” In golf, she likes “how rewarding it is when you qualify for something big or whenever you hit a really good shot. It’s just super fun.” She looks forward to coming back to Augusta National, this time as a contestant. “I’m just really excited because it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

He prepared for Saturday’s regional qualifier with one his mother’s favorite breakfast dishes - pancakes and sausage. His favorite part of golf is the competition: “I always love competition. I always like feeling my heart pounding out of my chest. I love the nerves.” As for his thoughts on Augusta National, he said, “My emotions are flowing with a lot of great thoughts. I’m actually going to be at Augusta. I really can’t believe it. I’m shocked.”

Keziah Swan of North East, Pa., is the youngest of four children, and now the final one to qualify and participate in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. Her sister, Lydia, won the Girls 10-11 age group in 2015. Keziah said her two favorite shots she hit in the regional qualifier were both chips. “I got them almost in the hole. I really hoped one would go in. The second one almost did,” she said. Keziah said she started golf at the age of three because her family “has been golfing for a long time, so I wanted to follow in their footsteps.” A number of activities keep her busy other than golf – so busy, in fact, that she says she doesn’t have the time to follow professional golf. She loves basketball and also plays the piano.

Ethan Jung of Fort Lee, N.J., had all his shots working during the regional qualifier at Aronimink. “I was excited because I did really good in putting, and also chipping,” he said. “But I was the most excited about driving. If I did bad driving, I felt like I could still go to the other stuff.” Jung’s favorite golfer is Collin Morikawa and that’s partly because of something his coach told him: “He said my swing is similar to Collin Morikawa’s.” Jung first picked up a club at age five and said he loved it right away. He likes it so much that he doesn’t play other sports. His favorite part about golf is being with his friends. “Other sports, you need to run and don’t talk at all,” he said. “But golf, you can walk around, and you can talk to your friends many times while walking. It’s really good.”

Trisha Lobo of Collegeville, Pa., said her favorite players are Megha Ganne, a four-time Drive, Chip and Putt National Finalist and a 2022 U.S. Curtis Cup team member, and Lydia Ko. She has a variety of other interests in addition to golf, including skiing, snowboarding, and softball in the spring. She likes everything about golf, such as “playing with other people so I can make more friends. It’s fun.” She started playing golf when she was three or four. It didn’t take her too much longer to like the competitive aspect of the game as well. She said she feels “really happy” about qualifying for the National Finals at Augusta National.
