SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Under a cloudless, sunny blue sky, the 2023 Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Desert Mountain Golf Club’s Outlaw Course featured a clutch playoff putt, a reward for a long journey and a redemption story.
And those tales describe just three of the eight winners of their respective age divisions who qualified for the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club on April 7, 2024.
Take Tara Liu of San Diego, for instance. She will gladly tell you that putting is her favorite part of golf. That fondness came in handy when she found herself tied with Ivy Zhou of Temple City, Calif., after completing all three skills in the Girls 10-11 division.
The tiebreaker process brought them back to the putting green, where the same 15-foot putt they faced in regulation would determine which player would advance.

“I was really nervous,” said Liu. “But I was happy to go first. I knew the line from the first time around today and just tried to keep my nerves down. I knew halfway there that it was going in.”
And it did. So when Zhou’s putt slid just left of the hole, Liu became the winner. Now she is looking forward to testing her putting skills on the famed 18th green at Augusta National, where her father will serve as her caddie.
Levi Swanson of Haleiwa, Hawaii, was one of 16 participants to make the long trip from that state to Arizona for the regional qualifier, but he made the most of it by winning the Boys 12-13 age division. After flying to Phoenix from Honolulu on Sept. 20, it didn’t take long for him to adjust to the desert.
“Hawaii is also pretty hot, but the dryness is definitely different here,” he said. “But it wasn’t bad.” He played 18 holes and spent time practicing at a driving range prior to the regional qualifier.
It’s a nice environment, all the kids are super chill out here, and just getting to do what I love, which is golf, is super fun.
Zadie Posternack
The extra work paid off in the form of winning the drive (where Swanson edged fellow Hawaii resident Pierson Huyck of Kamuela by three points) and chip categories.
With his grandmother, parents and older brother in attendance on Sunday, Swanson had plenty of support while earning his ticket to the National Finals.

“It should be a blast,” he said of what will be an even longer trip to Augusta National next April. “I think we’re going to bring the whole family.”
At the 2022 regional qualifier hosted by Desert Mountain, Zadie Posternack of San Diego finished just one point shy of advancing to Augusta National.
She wrote quite a different story this year, accumulating 172 points to record the highest overall score of any competitor at the regional and win the Girls 14-15 division by 16 points.
“She used it as fuel,” said her father, Jon Posternack, of last year’s heartbreaking result. “Just like life, you can’t let it get you down. I wasn’t sure if she would have some negative memories coming back here, but she has a very short memory when it comes to anything bad.”
“She’s super strong mentally,” said her coach, Pat Diaz, who works with Posternack at Mission Trails Golf Course in San Diego. “She’s a freshman in high school now and already becoming a leader there.”
Zadie Posternack, who started playing golf just over two years ago, is a huge fan of the Drive, Chip and Putt competition. “It’s a nice environment, all the kids are super chill out here, and just getting to do what I love, which is golf, is super fun.”

Bernie Eaton, Executive Director, Southwest PGA Section, pointed out the impact Drive, Chip and Putt can have on all participants, not just the winner.
“I think at these early stages of life it teaches them a little bit about competition,” he said. “It kind of moves the needle for them toward high school golf or even college golf. But it also gives our professionals and volunteers just a great joy to be out here and see the smiles on faces and the support of the parents and coaches.”
John Lyberger, PGA Director of Golf at Desert Mountain, concurred with Eaton.
“How could you not get involved in an event like this? Anything we can do to give back to the game of golf, from an amateur or professional level, well the members at Desert Mountain are very supportive. It’s exciting to see these kids. Drive, Chip and Putt gives them the desire to stay in the game, to continue to grow the game, and then hopefully one day give back to the game so they can get the next generation involved.”

About the Finalists
In the Girls 7-9 division, Ellie Ji of San Diego came out on top with 115 points, which included a leading 60 points in putting, her favorite category. A fan of Nelly Korda and Rose Zhang, Ji wants to be a professional golfer when she grows up. The 8-year-old plays plenty of golf with her Mom, who will likely caddie for her at Augusta National next April.

In the Boys 7-9 division, Parker Tang of Buckeye, Ariz., tied for the lead in the putting category with 65 points en route to a winning total of 124 points. He will celebrate his upcoming ninth birthday with a three-day trip to Disneyland, where his favorite ride is the Incredicoaster “because it takes you upside down.” Tang did admit that going to Augusta National “is an even better birthday present.”

In the Boys 10-11 division, Ryan Kim of Los Angeles won his favorite category, driving, by eight points on the way to a three-point overall win. Kim said going to Augusta National is “a dream come true,” and he hopes to get a picture with his favorite golfer, Rory McIlroy. The 10-year-old appeared surprisingly calm after his win, but his father failed to hold back joyful tears while watching the awards ceremony.

Tara Liu of San Diego prevailed in the Girls 10-11 age group on the strength of her driving and chipping – she won both skill contests – as well as her ability to overcome her nerves during a playoff putt. The Nelly Korda fan wants to be a newspaper editor when she grows up.

A tie for the most points in chipping propelled Eileen Chon of Irvine, Calif., to victory in the Girls 12-13 division. Chon, who is a huge fan of Viktor Hovland primarily because of his positive attitude, predicted she would be too nervous to talk to him if they were to meet at Augusta National next April.

In the Boys 12-13 division, Levi Swanson of Haleiwa, Hawaii, holed his third and final chip to win that category on his way to earning 152 points and first-place honors.

At the 2022 regional qualifier at Desert Mountain, Zadie Posternack of San Diego left her 30-foot putt agonizingly short, which might have been the shot that prevented her from advancing to Augusta National by a single point. This year she earned 15 points for the putt from that distance while dominating the Girls 14-15 division. “I’m so happy now,” she said. “It was tough last year. It’s really nice getting that redemption.”
