LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A sigh of relief reverberated across the grounds at Valhalla Golf Club on Sunday as the rain ceased and the clouds parted just in time for the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier to commence.
Young golfers from Ontario to Florida crowded onto the practice area at Valhalla, rain still dripping from the registration tent but the warm smiles underneath eager to greet them.
Ninety-five junior golfers were about to put their preparations to the test in pursuit of a coveted spot in next April’s Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club.
Colton Gress was the first player to make his dream come true on the dewy morning as he topped the Boys 14-15 division by more than 20 points. Gress was declared a National Finalist at just a quarter past 9 a.m. ET, but it was hardly early for him and his family.

“Well, (dad) got me up at 2:00 in the morning and I got on my clothes,” said Gress, who is from Coshocton, Ohio. “I didn’t really grab the right shorts; they don’t really match too well. But I just got in the car and fell asleep.”
Gress compiled the highest score in his age group in each of the three skills (he tied for the most points in putting), which he said gave him a lot of confidence.
From a first-timer to a veteran, Karis Reid of Carmel, Ind., earned her second trip to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, but this time in the Girls 14-15 division (she competed in the Girls 12-13 division in 2024). Reid felt confidence and faith were key.
“I relied on the Lord’s presence during my drive, chip and putt,” Reid said. “It just calmed me knowing that He has a plan.”

Some young golfers strike gold on their first attempt at qualifying for the National Finals, while others stay the course and never give up. The latter is true for Max DeHaven, the Boys 12-13 division winner, who lives just an hour and a half down the road in Hardinsburg, Ky.
DeHaven, who said he was “in shock” after being announced the winner in his age group,has tried five times to qualify for the National Finals. The wait was worth it, though, because this time around, he scored big by chipping in on his second attempt at the shot staged on Valhalla’s 18th green – a test designed to parallel the chip shot Xander Schauffele faced on his way to winning the 2024 PGA Championship.
From chip-ins to playoff putts, this year’s Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Valhalla was action-packed.
Following a playoff putt from 15 feet, Audrey Lu of Woodbridge, Ontario, was crowned the overall winner in the Girls 12-13 division. Lu and Avyanna Arabel Lai had tied with 129 total points, but Lu won by rolling the extra putt closer to the hole.
“The playoff was very nerve-racking, but I managed to go through and get the win, so it was cool,” Lu said. “I just told myself any result is good. I have already gotten this far, so just believe in myself.”
Lu with a big smilesaid this win is for her parents, who drove 10 hours to make this opportunity possible.
Lu added her dad will caddie for her at Augusta National in April, while Ethan Li, Boys 10-11 division winner, said his mom will carry his bag.

Li, a Plain City, Ohio, native, said his mom’s positivity helps him on the golf course.
“I want to thank my mom for her love and support,” Li said. “She practices with me when it’s raining, when it’s cold and when it’s really hot.”
He jokingly added, “I want to thank my sister for giving up her beauty sleep.”
Perri Harris, a Bowling Green, Ky., native, once again topped her age division in the regional qualifier at Valhalla.
Just a year ago, on the same grounds, Harris won the Girls 7-9 division to punch her ticket to the 2025 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. On Sunday, she won the Girls 10-11 division to become a repeat contender at Augusta National.
Harris’ grandfather is Kenny Perry, a former PGA Tour player and current PGA Tour Champions player. She expressed her excitement to return to the National Finals, but this time without nerves.
The Valhalla regional qualifier was full of Kentucky players, including the Boys 7-9 division winner Austin Cox. The Louisville, Ky., native, who most admires Rory McIlroy on the PGA Tour, said it’s a dream come true to reach the National Finals at Augusta National, where Mcllroy won the Masters this past April and donned the Green Jacket for the first time.

Cox won not one but two skills tests at Valhalla: putting and chipping.
When 7-year-old Brooklyn Sokol won the Girls 7-9 division and became the last player to earn a National Finals berth on Sunday, she proved age is only a number.
“I’m excited and happy, and I’m 7 so I’m really young, and I’m really glad to make it,” the Lutz, Fla., native, said softly.

About the Finalists
Austin Cox, a Louisville, Ky., native, didn’t have much to say after winning the Boys 7-9 division on Sunday, but he didn’t need to – his big grin said it all.
En route to punching a ticket to the 2026 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, Cox won the putting and the chipping contests at the Valhalla regional qualifier.
It will mark Cox’s first appearance at the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, and while he is excited, he said his dad – who wore a tearful smile just a few feet away – might be more excited.

Brooklyn Sokol outlasted the field in the Girls 7-9 division at the Valhalla regional qualifier, topping the field despite being just 7 years old.
The Lutz, Fla., native said, “I’m excited and happy, and I’m 7 so I’m really young and I’m really glad to make it.”
Sokol, whose favorite professional golfer is Scottie Scheffler, is excited to be on the same grounds as the current No. 1 player in the world.

Ethan Li of Plain City, Ohio, won the Boys 10-11 division. Not only did his family join him at Valhalla on Sunday, but so did his friends and teammates from the PGA Junior League. As good friends do, they prepared Li for his thank you speech.
Li lightheartedly added that “we’re all getting steak” in celebration of his win.

Perri Harris of Bowling Green, Ky., will return to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals for the second consecutive year, this time after topping the field in the Girls 10-11 division.
Despite competing in a different age division, it seems not much has changed with the junior golfer. Her grandfather, Kenny Perry, is still her favorite professional golfer and her dad will still be her caddie.
When asked if she plans to do anything different at the National Finals this year, she replied, “Same thing, probably even more excited.”

In his fifth attempt at qualifying for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, Max DeHaven, a Hardinsburg, Ky., native, finally topped the field in the Boys 12-13 division. The thing he is most looking forward to next April is driving down Magnolia Lane, but until then, he will celebrate with another favorite hobby.
“Well, we’re going duck hunting in North Dakota soon,” DeHaven said.

Some experiences are just worth the drive – at least that’s what Audrey Lu would say.
Lu, who won the Girls 12-13 division, owes it to her parents for making the 10-hour drive from their hometown of Woodbridge, Ontario, to Louisville, Ky.
Even more rewarding than that, though, she won her division after getting closest to the hole on a 15-foot playoff putt.
While Lu thinks the drive to Louisville was great because she got to enjoy the scenic nature around her (which is also why she loves golf).

Colton Gress became the first National Finalist at the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Valhalla, winning the Boys 14-15 division early on Sunday morning.
While the Coshocton, Ohio, native began the day “nervous and shaken up,” he said his drives settled him in and gave him confidence going into putting and chipping.

Karis Reid of Carmel, Ind., is returning to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals for the second time in her young career, this time in the Girls 14-15 division.
“I’m really excited that I get to go back,” Reid said.
When asked how she plans to make the upcoming experience different from her previous experience in 2024, she replied, “just having fun,” before adding, “I feel like I put a lot of focus on myself last time, so I feel like my main focus is going to be just having fun.”
