At Laurel Valley, where Arnold Palmer’s presence is still felt, National Finalists relied on their own prior knowledge while also drawing confidence from the encouragement of others to take a big step forward in their golf journey.
LIGONIER, Pa. – Each of the 95 competitorsin Saturday’s Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at sunny Laurel Valley Golf Club had just nine shots to hit in their attempt to reach the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club next spring. The pressure of that opportunity was perhaps most apparent as participants and parents walked in stride to the putting green for the final skill of the three-part competition.
There were smiles, tears and hugs as a National Finalist emerged in each of eight age divisions.
The Boys 14-15 age group got the day started, and Trey Susa of Sewickley, Pa., won that competition with 149 total points.
Susa has been building toward this moment after coming up short of the regional stage once before. He utilized local tournaments and PGA Junior League Championship experience to overcome nerves.

Perhaps that was why, after he hit his third drive outside the grid, he responded by winning the chipping skill and sinking his first putt en route to another 60 points in that skill, which set up his victory.
“I used to be really bad with nerves, especially since I started playing tournaments later than other kids,” Susa said. “A lot of deep breaths really helped me out there. Seeing other kids nervous helped me realize it was OK to hit one out.”
Claire Brady, competing in the Girls 14–15 division, knew this was her last chance to secure a trip to Augusta National. Ever since receiving plastic clubs from her grandfather as a 1-year-old, she knew this sport would take hard work and perseverance.
Brady, from Orchard Park, N.Y., was in ninth place out of 11 competing golfers after the drive skill and was the first participant to compete in the chipping discipline.
Unphased by the current standings, she drained both her first and third shots and backed up that performance with a 55-point effort on the putting green to secure her spot at Augusta National.
“I didn't do great on the drive so it kind of got me back in it,” Brady said. “I knew I would have a shot if I was able to putt well.”

On the day West Virginia triumphed in the Backyard Brawl, a long-running college football rivalry between West Virginia and Pittsburgh, country roads took Morgantown, W.V., native Andrew Grigsby to Laurel Valley. Grigsby’s next stop? Augusta National. The Boys 12–13 age group winner utilized lessons learned from last year’s regional qualifier to make it to the National Finals.
Grigsby, won the Boys 12-13 division with 146 total points, which was two higher than both Ryan Ritchie of Leonardtown, Md., and Ashton Bryant of Huntingtown, Md. The latter pair won putting and driving in their age group while Grigsby secured the chipping portion with 42 points.
Brooke Kline, victorious in her first regional appearance, became the second National Finalist of the day from nearby Sewickley, Pa. when she secured the Girls 12-13 division. While she embraced her parents, she also received acknowledgment from two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger, whose son Bodie was competing in the Boys 7-9 group.

As soon as Nathan Khera of Oakville, Ontario, reached scoring following his putting effort, he had a simple question: Where did he stack up against his opponents? As soon as he found out his score, he offered a quick fist pump, knowing he had won the Boys 10-11 division and had demonstrated improvement after coming up short at this stage last year at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa.
“Playing last year at Aronimink, I learned not to compensate for my misses, meaning if I left a chip short, don’t try to swing harder because you might blow it way by,” he said.
It was a Canadian sweep among the 10-11-year-olds as Evelyn He of Toronto won the driving and chipping competitions to secure victory in the Girls 10-11 age group.
She started playing golf at 7-and-a-half years-old after her cousin took up the game, and she took after her favorite player, LPGA winner Atthaya “Jeeno” Thitikul, by finishing first in her age group.
Yien Li became the third consecutive Canadian National Finalist upon winning the Boys 7-9 competition. As competitors in that group all gathered around scoring, one parent offered encouragement to all 12 young men as both parents and golfers enthusiastically applauded each other.
Li, of Aurora, Ontario, won the driving portion, and his 55-point total in putting was also the best score amassed by anyone in his age group. Tanner Bickel of Virginia Beach, Va., won the chipping portion.
In the Girls 7-9 division, Maggie Michaels of Lancaster, Pa., swept chipping and putting to advance to Augusta National by a 17-point margin.
Laurel Valley Golf Club is a first-time host of Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying. The venue has quite a history, namely that it is synonymous with Arnold Palmer, a statue of whom stands near the clubhouse. Laurel Valley hosted the 1965 PGA Championship, 1975 Ryder Cup and 2005 Senior PGA Championship.

“It’s been an incredible day for us at Laurel Valley and an incredible day to be around these young kids,” head professional Chris McKnight said. “I can’t think of a better way to honor Mr. Palmer’s tribute. He would be thrilled. He would be very proud of what we are doing at the club to honor these great young golfers.”
Susa’s grandmother had the opportunity to meet Palmer and beamed recalling the experience, noting how much it meant to her.
For his part, Trey Susa allowed himself to enjoy both the history and the moment.
“He is just a big part of us, honestly,” Susa said in summary. “It means a lot that this is where he was from and that I could do something cool here.”
Yien Li walked past scoring back to the putting green, where he could see the updated scoreboard. He took a quick look and, realizing the competition was still underway but that he had done enough to win the Boys 7-9 division, he quietly let out an exclamation of “Let’s go!”
Indeed, he won the driving discipline and after scoring 55 points on the putting green, also prevailed in the tiebreaker for that skill. His 118-point total was 12 more than his closest pursuer.
“Driving is my favorite part because I hit the ball far,” Li said. “I’m feeling really excited to be going to Augusta National.”

After completing the putting competition, Maggie Michaels of Lancaster, Pa., immediately knew she had triumphed in the Girls 7-9 division.
It was a big win for Michaels and a breakthrough similar to the one her favorite golfer, Tommy Fleetwood, recently experienced in winning the Tour Championship, his first PGA Tour title.
As Michaels went about completing her nine shots across the three skills, a simple piece of advice allowed her to cross the finish line.
“Not worrying about other people and just do your thing,” she said. “Just do you.”

Nathan Khera of Oakville, Ontario, was the first of three consecutive Canadians to earn a ticket from Laurel Valley to Augusta National. Khera, who aspires to possibly be a doctor when he grows up, used surgical precision to place in the top three in each discipline in the Boys 10-11 age group – including winning the chipping competition – to advance.
After learning from his experience in the regional qualifier at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa., a year ago, he was able to put together more consistent scoring.
“In U.S. Kids, I’ve gotten top five every single time, and I think that helps because I have so much confidence knowing my drive isn’t going to miss the area,” the Canadian said.

Evelyn He of Toronto, became the second consecutive Canadian to advance to the National Finals as she won both the driving and chipping competitions in the Girls 10-11 division.
She considers chipping to be her favorite part of the game, and she scored 55 points in that skill, 25 points more than the next-closest competitor in her age group.

A year ago in Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying, Andrew Grigsby of Morgantown, W.V., hit two of three drives outside the grid, something he remembered as he placed second in driving at Laurel Valley and outlasted the rest of the Boys 12-13 division to advance to the National Finals.
With a mantra of taking it one shot at a time, Grigsby set out to improve and did just that, advancing by the closest margin of victory of any of the eight age groups at Laurel Valley.
The encouragement from his fellow competitors helped Grigsby, and he hopes to find similar success at Augusta National Golf Club.

Brooke Kline, winner of the Girls 12-13 age group, had the lead after scoring 56 points in the driving skill and 40 points in the chipping skill, but went over the top in compiling 60 points on the putting green.
Even with enough points for victory, Kline was competing with herself to get the highest score possible. Perhaps this was why no competitor in her age group could match her 156-point total.
“I think it was just being patient knowing I had fun and enjoyed this competition,” Kline said of her day. “I approached it confidently and was excited. I love (Laurel Valley), and I thank them for hosting it. It was unbelievable and it’s just gorgeous out here.”

Despite hitting his third drive outside the grid, Trey Susa of Sewickley, Pa., advanced from the Boys 14-15 division. Susa channeled his favorite PGA Tour player Jordan Spieth and went on to win the chipping skill then finish with a 60-point performance in putting to total 149 points and punch his ticket to Augusta National Golf Club.
“I thought after I hit the third drive out of play that I had no chance, but other kids were nervous too and I came back with strong chipping and putting,” he said. “On the chipping, it was the same exact pitch I practiced before the round so I was very confident that I could do some damage.”

Girls 14-15 division winner Claire Brady of Orchard Park, N.Y., rallied after the driving skill by holing two of three chips and also scoring 55 points in putting to qualify for the National Finals in her final opportunity to do so.
“Starting off rough doesn’t mean you’re out of it. You can always come back,” said Brady when asked what she would tell her younger self.
