The Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Hazeltine National Golf Club, a well-known major venue, included a few subtle tributes to past champions. Meanwhile, National Finalist Chloe Perfect made a little history of her own.
CHASKA, Minn. – Hazeltine National Golf Club stayed true to its purpose by remembering its past on a beautifully blue autumn afternoon when it hosted a Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier.
The private suburban Minneapolis club, founded in 1962 and host of major championships, welcomed 96 junior golfers on Sunday for its first Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier since 2016. Eight of them earned a trip to Augusta National Golf Club for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals next April.

Young golfers traveled from near and far after advancing through local and subregional qualifiers, all to take nine shots each: three drives off Hazeltine National’s first tee measured for their length and accuracy, three chips from just short of the 18th green as well as three putts on the 18th green chosen deliberately as a nod to the club’s history.
The first of the three putts was the same six-footer Australian Hannah Green made to win the 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
I wanted it to happen, obviously, but I didn’t expect that I would win, so I’m really excited.
Chloe Perfect
The second was a 15-footer that the then-relatively-unknown Y.E. Yang had in his 2009 PGA Championship victory over Tiger Woods.
The final putt was a curling 30-footer to Hazeltine National’s traditional Sunday hole location that Chloe Perfect made in the Girls 14-15 division. That’s the one that sent her on to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.
“We didn’t tell any of the kids about it,” said Gary Reding, Hazeltine National’s Drive, Chip and Putt general chair. “They have enough pressure on them. Today just happens to be Sunday.”
That putt helped Perfect to a nine-point margin of victory in her 12-player age group.

“She was perfect on that one,” Reding said.
In a sport that often demands near-perfection, the player from Council Bluffs, Iowa, noted, “I thought I did pretty good.”
Perfect, who grew up near Council Bluffs Country Club, is also in show choir and marching band in school. She and her parents drove up from Council Bluffs on Saturday.
After winning her division, Perfect posed for photographers – as well as family and friends with their cell phones – while holding an oversized “Golden Ticket” to Augusta National in front of her.
“I wanted it to happen, obviously, but I didn’t expect that I would win,” Perfect said. “So I’m really excited.”
She earned that ticket to Augusta National in her last chance to do so and fought back tears as she talked about this last chance.
“I’ve been working my whole life and I’m just so excited that I got to move on out of all the people who have worked at golf their whole life, just like me,” Perfect said. “It’s really exciting to get out there and meet new people.”
Cade Kershaw, of Northfield, Minn., won the Boys 10-11 division handily, outscoring the next-closest competitor by 23 points. Kershaw made putts from 6 and 15 feet and scored 20 of 25 possible points on the third putt from 30 feet. His friend and neighbor Rory French finished fifth in that division.

Kershaw and French are next-door neighbors and co-architects of their own backyard golf course, the R.C.C.C., which stands for the Rory Cade Country Club. It’s defined by pine trees and out-of-bounds bordering the adjacent Northfield Golf Club.
“I go out to my course and chip, putt and drive a lot,” Kershaw said. “Me and Rory live right next to each other and we’re good friends. We’ve very competitive, but we’re always going to pull for each other.”
A club that has hosted two U.S. Opens and two U.S. Women’s Open, a U.S. Senior Open, two PGA Championships and a KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, among many others, was one of this year’s 10 Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying sites. The lineup included other major-championship venues such as Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., and Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
The Drive, Chip and Putt will return to Hazeltine National next year while the KPMG PGA Women’s Championship returns in 2026. The Ryder Cup returns in 2029. All of that, Reding noted, is not a bad way to round out the decade.
“One of our missions is junior golf,” Reding said. “We love hosting major championships. We consider this to be a major also.”
Leah Mack, winner of the Girls 7-9 division, lives 10 minutes from Hazeltine National in the nearby town of Excelsior, Minn.
She holed her third and final chip to be the first to advance from Hazeltine to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club next April.
Never mind that she declared the driving part of the competition her favorite because, “it’s just really fun. You get to hit it hard.”
Mack slept in her own bed before making the short ride to a course with a practice range and fast greens that she knows well. She advanced through two nearby qualifiers to get back home. She won herself and her dad and caddie Cordell a trip to Augusta after a victory she said she envisioned.
“I just thought about it, and it happened,” she said simply.

Nikhil Rao celebrated a National Finals berth by face-timing with his grandparents, twin sister and older brother back home in Lawrence, Kan.
Rao won the Boys 7-9 division rather comfortably after he holed his first two attempts from 6 and 15 feet in the putting skill, almost just like he had practiced it back home.
Aside from golf, Rao likes to play chess and basketball, and he enjoys following the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas Jayhawks. He also likes the Drive, Chip and Putt putting skill and names Rory McIlroy as his favorite golfer.
“Because I just like him and he drives the ball far,” Rao said.

Alexandra Farrell did her reconnaissance before winning the Girls 10-11 division.
She made the short trip from her home in Edina, Minn., to Hazeltine National in nearby Chaska a few days before the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier. Farrell and a friend went to hit a few drives off Hazeltine’s first tee and get in some practice on the putting green. Farrell then went out on Sunday morning and made two of three putts in that skill on her way to overall victory.
Farrell scored the most points in putting even after declaring driving as her favorite part of the competition and Nelly Korda as her favorite golfer because of her great golf swing.
“I’m known for hitting it very far and hitting bombs,” she said.
Farrell plans to have her father caddie for her in the National Finals. He taught her the game and they have played a lot of golf together. When asked who is more excited, she said, “Me, because I’m just excited and so happy to win.”

Cade Kershaw has fashioned his own golf course in the backyard of his family’s Northfield, Minn., home, where he chips and hits balls against a backdrop of trees.
Despite that practice, it was Kershaw’s putting that went a long way in helping him earn a ticket to Augusta National for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. He made his first two putts and scored 70 out of a possible 75 points in the putting skill on his way to winning the Boys 10-11 division at Hazeltine National.
Kershaw said he was “pretty young” when he started hitting a ball around with plastic clubs. He kept playing, all the way from his backyard onto Northfield Golf Club just beyond it.
“It started with him hitting real balls, but no more,” said his father Ryan, the head men’s basketball coach at Carleton College, an NCAA Division III school in Northfield.
Now it’s strictly foam balls. Any broken windows?
“Not yet,” Ryan said.

Ella Souli learned to play golf from a cousin because she said it looked like fun. Souli earned a trip to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals by listening to herself.
Souli said she had a “good feel” what the day would bring when she awoke Sunday morning for the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Hazeltine National.
“So I just decided to listen to it,” she said.
Souli, from Otsego, Minn., holed two of her three putts and won the Girls 12-13 division by 10 points with her 123-point total. This was just her second attempt at reaching Augusta National.
“I just want to go to Augusta and play,” Souli said. “That’s all.”

Hudson Blake chipped and putted his way to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, even though he thinks driving the golf ball is the most fun part.
“Just because you can swing as hard as you want and hope it goes straight,” he said.
Blake’s father taught him the game when he was 3 or 4 years old and now, he’s headed to Augusta National after winning the Boys 12-13 division at Hazeltine National.
Blake, his parents and older sister flew to Minnesota the day before the regional qualifier from their home in Fort Morgan, Colo. He edged out Walker Nannen and Leo Jurbala by fewer than 10 points.
“Just being there,” he said. “It will be fun.”
Blake said his favorite golfer is Rickie Fowler, whom he met through a meeting his father had set up.
“He’s a real cool dude,” Blake said.

Chloe Perfect won the Girls 14-15 age group to reach Augusta National in her last year of Drive, Chip and Putt eligibility.
It was, well, pretty perfect.
“I get that a lot,” she said about the wordplay on her last name.
Perfect credited her putting for her win in the last year before she’s too old for this competition. She and her family drove to Hazeltine National from their home in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
“We’re all pretty much excited,” she said. “I think my dad’s pretty excited, too. I just want to play there and play against a lot of good players. I just want to see Augusta National.”
Before she left Hazeltine National, she taped a short promo in which she said, “I’m Chloe Perfect and I’m going to Augusta.”
“I didn’t think I’d ever say that,” Perfect later said.

Isaiah Fowler bombed a drive past 300 yards, holed a chip shot and made a 15-foot putt for one score of 25 points – the maximum available for each of nine shots – in each of the three skills. Those shots helped tremendously as Fowler won the Boys 14-15 division.
And that, apparently, is why they call it Drive, Chip and Putt.
“If the second chip hadn’t gone in, it would have gone so far past I never would have made it,” Fowler said.
Fowler flew from his home in Greeley, Colo., on Saturday and by Sunday, he had his ticket to Augusta National for next April.
“It was worth the trip,” he said.
Fowler won his age group with 164 total points, which left him 12 points ahead of the field. After completing his round, he immediately asked in the scoring tent about his group’s best scores.
“I thought maybe the group-before-us scores hadn’t been entered,” Fowler said. “I thought maybe it would take 180 to make it. I was wrong.”
