KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — For the second straight year, the Aloha Spirit radiated among the 108 youth golfers and their families at the iconic Four Seasons Hualalai Golf Course for the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier.
Golfers aged 7 to 15 competed Sunday in the three skills on the course’s 16th, 17th and 18th holes. Competitors scored points for each of nine shots – three in each discipline – and the leading scorer in each of eight age divisions qualified for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on April 5, 2026, at Augusta National Golf Club, where the incomparable Masters Tournament is played each year.
The one-of-a-kind event in paradise was organized by the Aloha Section of the PGA of America, an organization focused on growing the game of golf in Hawaii, whether through grassroot events like Sunday’s competition, business ventures or golf lessons.
“We create opportunities for kids and players across the state,” said Wesley Wailehua, executive director of the Aloha Section. “Every single professional in golf has been touched by a PGA Professional that has inspired them to play better. And when golfers are discouraged, PGA of America is there to bring them back in and get that golf euphoria, that one shot that wants them to be connected.”

Unlike most Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifiers, Hualalai featured a welcome dinner, hosted by the Aloha Section on Saturday night, for all competitors and their families. The purpose of the dinner was to educate the guests on the hospitality and culture of Aloha throughout the islands. Organizers also reminded the young players how impactful the game of golf can be, and how special it is that they all get to play it.
“This is something we do as the host section to welcome families that make it out here to Hawaii,” Wailehua continued. “It’s an expensive trip, and the opportunity to host over the last two years has been really great for Hawaii.”
The competition itself began with exciting drama. In the Girls 7-9 division, Audrey Zhang of Diamond Bar, Calif., found herself in a playoff after finishing her day with 125 points and tied with Queenie Gao. To break the tie, the two youngsters faced an overtime putting contest from 15 feet.
Both golfers missed on their first attempt, but Zhang calmly sank her second attempt with perfect pace and precision. Her mother, Sisi, immediately erupted with uncontrolled joy.
“We were very nervous, but very happy when she made the putt,” Sisi said.
For Boys 10-11 champion Vincent Cuevas of Chino Hills, Calif., qualifying for Augusta National was always something he envisioned — a dream that dates to his golf-themed first-birthday party. That lifelong goal finally became reality when he scored 139 total points to comfortably win his division.
“I’m so really proud of how he carried himself,” Cuevas's mother, Luisa, said. “He was really confident and didn’t let stress get to him. He just really maintains his composure.
“We always talk (about competing at Augusta). He’s been golfing for so long. And just seeing his journey is very exciting. I’m in shock right now.”

Landyn Kelly of Henderson, Nev., who won the Boys 7-9 contest, not only was happy to punch his ticket to the National Finals, he also was grateful for the people who helped him get to this point: his parents.
“I’m feeling very excited and I’m so proud of my family for helping me get to this point and helping me qualify for Augusta,” Kelly said.
“I’m happy that I was able to come to Hawaii for the first time.”
Kelly’s mother, Brandi, echoed many of her son’s thoughts and was taken aback by the island’s beauty and tranquility on her first visit.
“[Hawaii is] incredible,” she continued. “Absolutely gorgeous all around you. No matter where you look, it’s just beautiful. I could live here permanently.”
“It was absolutely exciting, but nerve-wracking at the same time,” she said. “Just watching him grow up since he was 15 months old and picking up a plastic golf club, it’s just been exciting to watch.”

While many of the National Finalists had never visited Hawaii before, four of the eight players to advance to Augusta National call Hawaii home: Mie Funakoshi of Kailua-Kona (Girls 10-11), Lucy Cui of Honolulu (Girls 12-13), Charlie Bourne of Waikoloa (Boys 12-13) and Shane Murphy of Koloa (Boys 14-15).
A year ago when Hualalai hosted a regional qualifier, no local players qualified. Needless to say, this foursome is eager to get to the mainland and showcase what Hawaii golf is all about. They were also very excited, however, to welcome the visiting players to Sunday’s event and share the Aloha Spirit with them.
“Being able to share Hawaiian culture with everybody else who's on the course,” Murphy said, “it's a great feeling, because we want to welcome you home to our island and show us our culture.”

Among the eight National Finalists, only one has competed at Augusta National before. Amber Lee of San Diego qualified for the 2022 National Finals in the Girls 10-11 division. This time around, in her last year of Drive, Chip and Putt eligibility, she’ll compete in the Girls 14-15 contest.
“I’m still really excited to go back,” Lee said. “After learning (from 2022), I feel like I’ll be more prepared for it.”
Lee posted 133 total points to win her age group, even as she claimed she didn’t perform up to her standards in the chipping portion. She posted 25 points in chipping, but more than made up for it in the driving and putting skills, scoring a combined 108 points in those two competitions.
“In the chipping skill, I didn’t particularly do my best,” Lee said. “I try to really focus on putting and try not to think too much about the score.”
While next year’s regional qualifier will most likely be back on the mainland, Wailehua and the rest of the Aloha Section hope to help bring the event back to the Big Island one day.
After all, who wouldn’t want to compete in paradise again?
“This is one of the highest levels of junior competitions that we can have here in the state of Hawaii,” Wailehua said. “One, it creates opportunity and exposure for golf to be seen on the national stage for Hawaii, which is exceptional.
“And two, I think part of it is the experience of travel. One of the best things about golf, especially as a junior, is the opportunity to see different parts of the world and different people. It’s exceptional for a lot of kids to be (competing) here in Hawaii.”

About the Finalists
Boys 7-9 champion Landyn Kelly of Henderson, Nev., wasn’t afraid to boast about his favorite professional golfer. A Tiger Woods fanatic, Kelly looks forward to competing on the same course on which his idol won the Green Jacket five times.
“It’s going to be exciting, because (Woods) won a lot of [Masters] Tournaments,” Landyn said. “He practiced a lot and didn’t give up.”

Tied with Queenie Gao at the end of the Girls 7-9 contest, Audrey Zhang of Diamond Bar, Calif., needed to execute as she faced a tiebreaker putt from 15 feet. Zhang sank the putt with perfect pace on her second attempt.
“I was very happy,” she said of winning the tiebreaker.
Zhang idolizes professional golfer Justin Rose and plans to prepare hard to perform her best at Augusta National.

From Boys 10-11 champion Vincent Cuevas’s very first birthday, his family knew he was destined to play golf. After a golf-themed birthday party, Vincent’s love for the game only grew. He looks up to Tiger Woods and enjoys the peacefulness and tranquility that the game brings.
“I love how relaxing the game is, and I love the nice courses,” he said.
While competing at Augusta National in the spring, Vincent, from Chino Hills, Calif., plans to have his father caddie, as he was the one who first got him interested in the sport.

While most of the golfers at Hualalai had never visited Hawaii before, one National Finalist grew up playing just down the road. Mie Funakoshi of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, won the Girls 10-11 competition after scoring an impressive 156 points overall, including 65 points in the putting portion.
Funakoshi will travel to the mainland this upcoming spring to compete at Augusta National and hopes to make her home island proud.
“I’m just super excited,” she said of qualifying. “I hope to make some new friends and do my best.”
In terms of celebrating her monumental achievement, Funakoshi and her family planned to have dinner and shaved ice.

Many golfers enjoy launching a drive down the fairway or sinking a 20-foot putt, but for Boys 12-13 winner Charlie Bourne of Waikoloa, Hawaii, chipping brings the most joy.
“I like chipping because of the backspin,” he said. “It’s very satisfying to see the ball roll, too.”
While Bourne practices around town almost daily as a West Hawaii local, he wanted to take it easy after spending so much time preparing for this competition and rest up for Augusta National.
“I’ll probably celebrate by being in my room and watching TV,” he said.

When Girls 12-13 champion Lucy Cui of Honolulu qualified for Augusta National, she was excited not just to compete among the best players at her age level, but to see through on a promise her parents made prior to the competition.
“My parents said if I qualified, I could get a cat,” she said excitedly.
While Cui was unsure what she would name her new furry friend, she hadn’t ruled out naming it after something related to golf.

Boys 14-15 winner Shane Murphy was among the National Finalists from Hawaii, and he felt honored to share his culture and home with his fellow mainland competitors for a weekend.
“Being able to share Hawaiian culture with everybody else who's on the course… it’s a great feeling because we want to welcome you home to our island and show you our culture,” said Murphy, of Koloa, Hawaii.
Even though Murphy will be a long way from his home while competing at Augusta National, he plans to bring the Aloha Spirit with him in hopes of making his homeland proud.
“I really can’t explain this feeling,” he said. “Words can’t express how I feel to be representing the state of Hawaii.”

While most players love the game of golf for the experience of competing, Girls 14-15 champion Amber Lee prefers the daily grind of getting a little bit better every day.
“I just love practicing every day,” she said. “I love grinding toward trying to be more perfect every single day, even though I won’t ever be able to get there. But it’s so fun to work toward it.”
Lee, from San Diego, looks up to professional golfer Nelly Korda, viewing her career as a blueprint for her own LPGA dream. Lee hopes to learn from Korda’s demeanor when it comes to improving her overall game.
“She has such a beautiful swing and she’s also such a calm player on the course, and I hope to be more like her.”
