COLUMBUS, Ohio – Second chances. That was the story of the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier Saturday at historic Scioto Country Club. Two alternates gained late entries to compete at Scioto, and they made the most of them, earning a trip to Augusta National Golf Club next April. A third youngster earned her second trip to the National Finals.
Elijah Lemmon, 13, of McCordsville, Ind., won the Boys 14-15 division after gaining his spot when James Lancia of Fort Wayne, Ind., had to withdraw with a broken thumb. In the Girls 14-15 division, Lyla Hampton, 14, of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., got a reprieve after the withdrawal of Swetha Sathish of Oakville, Ont., and she surged to victory on the strength of two holed putts and a made chip shot.
Meanwhile, Paige Radebach of Webberville, Mich., will have a second shot at winning the National Finals, slated for April 2, 2023, after capturing her second regional victory, this time in the Girls 12-13 division. Radebach competed in the 7-9 division in 2019 at Augusta National, winning the putting competition and finishing fourth overall.
“I’m really excited. I was pretty young the first time so I’m hoping I can enjoy the experience a little bit more than before,” said the 13-year-old, who advanced to the National Finals for the second time from a Central Ohio course. In 2018 she triumphed at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village Golf Club in nearby Dublin.
Speaking of the Golden Bear, the 96 competitors who qualified for this Drive, Chip and Putt regional at Scioto weren’t lacking for inspiration upon their arrival. They were greeted by a recorded message from Nicklaus, the six-time Masters champion, who learned the game and honed his skills at Scioto.
Equally special was the fact that the drive portion of the competition was conducted on the practice range in the vicinity of a commemorative plaque dedicated to the Golden Bear in 2013 that marks the ground where a 10-year-old Nicklaus hit his first shots at Scioto.

“Given our history here at Scioto and how much we’ve been involved in major championships and having the greatest golfer who ever played grow up at Scioto, it’s special for these kids to get to be here and be a part of it, and it’s special for us to host them,” said Greg Wolf, Scioto’s general manager. “Hopefully they’ll take something from this day that will help them with their golf going forward.”
It was fun that I was able to watch her play [at Augusta], and it definitely made me push myself because, obviously, I wanted to be able to do the same thing.
“It’s just amazing watching these kids,” added Scioto head golf professional Joe Falardeau. “What stood out to me the most is that as the ages get younger, they just step up and hit it, no fear, but it’s obvious that all these kids have talent that is beyond fathomable. Having the legacy of Jack Nicklaus here as a junior golfer and the kids being able to hit their drives where he took his first golf shots is pretty cool.”

A breezy and slightly overcast morning gave way to bright sunshine at the storied course where Bobby Jones, co-founder of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, won the 1926 U.S. Open and became the first player to win the U.S. Open and The Open in the same year. Former Ohio State University football coach John Cooper, a Scioto member, was among the spectators in attendance early in the day.
Lemmon is the second member of his family to earn a trip to Augusta National after his sister Ressie made it in 2019 and then competed in the 2021 National Finals after having to wait a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ressie also competed Saturday at Scioto and acquitted herself well, finishing third in the Girls 12-13 division.
“It was fun that I was able to watch her play [at Augusta], and it definitely made me push myself because, obviously, I wanted to be able to do the same thing,” said Elijah Lemmon, who found out on Tuesday that he was in the regional. “To be able to go back there to that beautiful golf course is going to be a lot of fun.”

Hampton said it’s “crazy” thinking about going to Augusta National. “It’s kind of unbelievable,” she said. “I didn’t even think I would make it here. I’m very happy that I won. I’m very proud of myself.”
Harrison Young, 12, of Springfield, Ohio, won the Boys 12-13 division in his first try in the Drive, Chip and Putt. His coach is Scioto CC assistant professional and golf instructor Chris Yoder.
In the Boys 10-11 division, Robert Melendez of Ann Arbor, Mich., edged Greyson Cloern of Louisville, Ky., by one point thanks to scoring a solid 60 points in the chipping competition. Melendez, 10, previously watched older sisters Mia and Amaya reach the regional level. Competing in the Drive, Chip and Putt for the second time, Ava Gilbart, 11, of Toronto captured the Girls 10-11 division.
In the 7-9 age division, a pair of eight-year-olds registered 15-point victories. Kylie Miller of Mayfield, Ky., won the girls competition while Maxwell Lattavo of Chillicothe, Ohio, topped the boys division.

About the Finalists
Elijah Lemmon, 13, of McCordsville, Ind., is an Indianapolis native. His favorite golfer is Will Zalatoris “because he’s a really good ball striker, and he’s really skinny like me.” Lemmon’s career aspirations are to play on the PGA Tour and then to become a golf course architect. He got his start in the game hanging out with his grandfather, Tom Kirby.

Lyla Hampton, 14, of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., wants to be a doctor when she grows up or play on the LPGA tour. Hampton attended the 2021 Solheim Cup in Toledo, Ohio, but does not try to model her swing after any professional golfer. Her father Shaun introduced her to golf at age 5 and she plays at Detroit Golf Club. Sam Troyanovich, who competes on the Epson Tour, is Hampton’s coach. Said Hampton, “It’s very cool. I was really nervous at first because my first drive went out of the bounds line, and I was like, ‘It’s probably not going to happen, probably not going to win.’ But then I saw the scores, and my score was the highest. I’m very proud of myself. Very happy I won. Huge accomplishment for myself.”

Harrison Young, a 12-year-old from Springfield, Ohio, said his favorite golfer is Jordan Spieth, “because whenever he gets into a tough situation, he always finds a way out,” and after competing at Scioto, he would like to meet Jack Nicklaus. Young’s favorite part of the game is driving, and he hit all nine drives in play in the three stages of Drive, Chip and Putt qualifying. Young would like to play Division I college golf and then make it to the PGA Tour. “This is my first year trying Drive, Chip and Putt, and I didn’t really have any expectations, and I didn’t think I’d get all the way there [to Augusta] but here I am.” Young began playing golf at age 3 but got serious about it at Springfield Country Club. Now he is a self-proclaimed “range rat.”

Paige Radebach, 13, of Webberville, Mich., will compete for the second time in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, having finished fourth overall in the Girls 7-9 division in 2019. Her full name is Paige Alexandria Radebach, so she proudly says that her initials spell PAR. Radebach met Bubba Watson and other players at Augusta in 2019 and collected a lot of autographs. Phil Mickelson, who she also saw, is her favorite golfer “because he’s really cool … and he’s left-handed.” Radebach wants to be a financial advisor when she grows up because she likes math. She has played golf since she was 8, is a member of the First Tee in Michigan, has played in U.S. Kids Golf events and wants to play college golf at Michigan State. “I’m really excited. I was pretty young the first time so I’m hoping I can enjoy the experience a little bit more than before.”

Robert Melendez, 10, of Ann Arbor, Mich., won the Scioto regional by one point. His favorite golfer is Tiger Woods “because he practiced a lot and worked hard to get to the point where he is.” Melendez’s favorite part of golf is driving because he hits it far “and that’s my advantage.” Melendez, whose father Robert introduced him to golf when he was about 2 years old, wants to be a professional golfer when he grows up. “First ball I hit was high and straight,” he said. He shot 8-under 64 in the 2022 U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C., to finish second in the 10-year-old boys division.

Ava Gilbart, 11, of Toronto, qualified for the National Finals on her second attempt. Her favorite golfer is fellow Canadian Brooke Henderson. “She’s very consistent,” Gilbart said. The best part of Gilbart’s game is her chipping. “I’m just so happy. I can’t wait to go there [to Augusta]. It’s going to be fun to go there. It looks cool.” Gilbart, who also players soccer and tennis, started playing golf at age 8 and frequently plays with her 13-year-old brother Lucas.

Kylie Miller, 8, of Mayfield, Ky., won the Girls 7-9 division. Her favorite golfer is Tiger Woods and she wants to be a pro golfer when she grows up. Her favorite part of her game is driving “because it goes the farthest,” and the best part of her game in the regional qualifier was chipping. She became interested in golf by following her sister, Emily (11), at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky., and started playing at age 6. The youngster, who is coached by Joe Holloway, said the best part of golf is “winning.”

Maxwell Lattavo, 8, of Chillicothe, Ohio, won the Boys 7-9 division. His favorite golfer is Tiger Woods, “because he’s really good.” Favorite part of his game is driving because “it’s fun.” He aspires to be a scholar and a golf-course designer when he grows up. Lattavo, who started playing golf at age 4 after his father Anthony introduced him to the game, plays at Chillicothe Country Club, which he knows was designed by Donald Ross. Jake Houston, the head pro at Springfield (Ohio) Country Club, coaches Lattavo.
