PINEHURST, N.C. – The road to Augusta National Golf Club and the 2026 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals went through Pinehurst Resort and Country Club for the 96 players in Sunday’s regional qualifier.
With only nine shots for a chance at the lone qualifying spot in each of eight age divisions, it’s a slim margin to earn the coveted trip down Magnolia Lane. As if that pressure wasn’t enough, players had to weather a windy, overcast day at the famed resort in the North Carolina sandhills, one of 10 regional sites across the country that will ultimately decide the final field for next spring’s competition at Augusta National.
One of the best stories of the day came early from the Boys 7-9 division, where aptly named Ace Pizzuti of Franklin, Tenn., punched his ticket to the National Finals thanks to a strong short game. With a name like Ace, it would seem that the 8-year-old has been a golfer all his life. In reality, he only picked up the game in the last year, and his name has nothing to do with golf. Thomas is his first name, but he goes by his middle name, Ace, which represents his mother’s initials.
“If he becomes a lawyer, he’s Thomas,” quipped his father, Phil. “If he’s a golfer, he’s Ace.”

Pizzuti got in some last-minute practice over the weekend at Pinehurst’s nine-hole short course, The Cradle, where his tee shot on the last hole was met by cheers from a group of players gathered there. He’ll have an even larger gallery cheering for him next spring at Augusta National.
Of the eight to advance, only one player from the Pinehurst regional is returning to the National Finals: Adalyn Lupton from Tega Cay, S.C., winner of the Girls 12-13 division.

“I'm super excited. Hopefully I can do better than last time,” a grinning Lupton said. She previously qualified for the National Finals in 2023 and finished eighth out of 10 in the Girls 7-9 division. Back then, her family still lived in Wisconsin, so she hadn’t hit a chip or putt on grass in a while. Now, she can play golf year-round.
Lupton hasn’t just learned from her own experience. One of her friends, McKenna Nelson, qualified for the National Finals twice and won the Girls 14-15 age group in 2024. Come next April, Lupton will be ready for her own second chance.
In the Boys 10-11 group, Cade Reel of Dayton, Tenn., was in a familiar position. At the Golf Club of Tennessee regional in 2023, he was in contention to win his age division but struggled at the end with his putter.

This year, Reel focused on leaving putts just in front of the hole and inside the first scoring ring, which is worth 20 points. Reel was in first place entering the putting portion and scored 55 points (20-15-20) to hold on for a narrow five-point overall win.
In the Girls 7-9 division, Zoe Crosby of Simpsonville, S.C., didn’t think she would qualify after a poor performance with her driver. However, she went on to finish second in chipping and first in putting, cruising to the National Finals by a 13-point margin.
“I started to cry,” Crosby said of realizing she had won. “My family was cheering me on and it took so much practice to get here.”
Andie Deck, a Chattanooga, Tenn., resident has enjoyed watching the Masters Tournament and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur on television and is “excited and happy” to get her chance to compete at the National Finals after winning the Girls 10-11 age group.

Elizabeth Guthrie scored a nearly perfect 70 points (out of a possible 75) in the driving portion – the most in any of the eight age groups – en route to her Girls 14-15 win, but the Charlotte, N.C., native was quick to point out she had some help.
“It was definitely downwind, but I just hit three really solid drives. I was just hoping to keep them in play,” she said after receiving her first-place medal. This year was her first time competing in a Drive, Chip and Putt regional, let alone advancing to the National Finals.
Jaxon Osborne’s day in the Boys 12-13 age group was a story of consistency. The player from Austin, Texas, scored 52, 55 and 55 points in the three skills, respectively, to win his age group by five points.
Tyler Fink’s journey to becoming a National Finalist wasn’t easy. The Chesapeake, Va., resident hit three drives outside the grid in his local qualifier but advanced to the Pinehurst regional after winning both the chipping and putting portions of that competition.
The high school freshman had a strong range session on Sunday and rode that momentum to the competition, where he had at least a share of the lead after each skill. Tied with Blake Chauhan of Memphis, Tenn., with just putting remaining, Fink made his first effort from six feet and nearly converted from 15 and 30 feet as well to win the Boys 14-15 division and become the final player of the day to advance to the National Finals.

“Honestly, I was pretty cold,” Fink said about putting in the late-afternoon wind with a trip to Augusta National on the line. “I was trying to stay warm and was just telling myself that I knew the break and that I just needed to get it started on the right line.”
No matter the age or gender, the sportsmanship on display among the competitors was both admirable and inspirational. Players were humble in victory and gracious in defeat. Parents and staff were supportive, no matter the outcome.
“It’s really special and fun,” added Jeff Abbot, Executive Director and CEO of the Carolinas PGA section. “I also look at the team here. We have people from the PGA of America, the USGA, Augusta National, everyone coming together to support these kids and their journey through golf. Yeah, it's a competition, but at the end of the day, I hope players made some friends and realize the joy that this game can bring. I really hope that's what they take away, a day of fun and hopefully a lifetime of fun.”
It is often said that there’s never a bad day at Pinehurst, and Sunday was a great one for all involved.

About the Finalists
When Ace Pizzuti, Boys 7-9 winner, was asked how he would celebrate his first major achievement in golf, the Franklin, Tenn., native said he wanted to “stay (in Pinehurst) one more day so I can practice more.”
Pizzuti finished second in chipping and won the putting skill among his age division for a narrow five-point overall win.

One thing Zoe Crosby, winner of the Girls 7-9 division, loves about golf is when she earns a trophy or medal. The 8-year-old from Simpsonville, S.C., plans on earning a lot more trophies over the years, and not just in golf. She also loves tennis. But which does she enjoy more?
“I like both,” she replied. “I'm trying to win a major in both.”

Cade Reel, winner of the Boys 10-11 division, was the only National Finalist who didn’t finish first in any of the three skills. It’s fitting that his favorite professional golfer is Scottie Scheffler. Not only do they have similar footwork, but Reel was consistently strong in all phases of his game and as a result, will return home to Dayton, Tenn., with the first-place medal.

Andie Deck of Chattanooga, Tenn., finished last in putting in her age group but performed so well in driving (second) and chipping (first) that she held on to claim the Girls 10-11 division. This is her first year playing competitive tournaments and participating in Drive, Chip, and Putt.
“I'm probably gonna brag about it a little bit,” Deck said with a smile when asked what she would tell her friends in her fifth-grade class when she returns to school.

Jaxon Osborne of Austin, Texas, hit two of his three chips within two feet of the hole to win the chipping portion and ultimately the Boys 12-13 division.
Osborne wants to be a professional golfer when he’s older, and one of his favorite players is Bryson DeChambeau because he’s really good and Osborne likes to watch him on YouTube. Osborne’s older sister, Ava, is committed to play college golf at North Carolina.
“I just can’t wait to experience the course for the first time after watching it on TV,” Osborne said of Augusta National.

Adalyn Lupton of Tega Cay, S.C., was one of three players in the Girls 12-13 age group to make two putts on Sunday, but she was the only player who made the 30-footer.
“Putting is always fun, too, because a lot of times that's how you win,” she said.

Tyler Fink of Chesapeake, Va., had the second-best driving performance of the day among all age groups en route to winning the Boys 14-15 division. Fink, who scored 68 of his 169 total points with his driver, really only hit one bad shot, his first chip that he “juiced” past the hole due to his adrenaline and nerves.
“I just love the grind,” Fink said about golf. “I love how you have to go to work every day. Just improve little by little.”

Despite struggling in the chipping portion, Elizabeth Guthrie of Charlotte, N.C., hit all three of her drives at least 280 yards, won that skill and finished fourth in putting to advance to the National Finals for the first time.
“I just had to mentally tell myself that I was just as good as anybody else here,” Guthrie said of her mindset, “and I know that I could do it if I just hit good shots.”
Guthrie’s favorite golfers are Nelly Korda and Rose Zhang because they keep themselves very composed and just play their game. Both of her older brothers play college golf – Will at Georgia and Luke at Savannah College of Art and Design.
