UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Oregon teenager Connor Holden admits he doesn’t make enough mid-range putts for a tournament-tested golfer. Still, he’s never been more confident on the greens under pressure than he is now. He put that on display Saturday afternoon at the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Chambers Bay.
Holden needed to nestle his final putt, from 30 feet, within inches of the hole, and he did that to edge Alexander Thu in the Boys 14-15 age group and earn his spot in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club on April 7, 2024. Holden was one of eight golfers in the 96-player Chambers Bay field to advance.
The competitors saw a little bit of everything during a wild-weather day on the links-style property roughly 35 miles south of Seattle, which was the site of the 2015 U.S. Open.
Players in the morning wave competed under sunny skies and still conditions. But by the afternoon, the finishing groups endured much more volatile circumstances as a light drizzle and strong wind gusts came in off nearby Puget Sound.
All that Holden, of Canby, Ore., was focused on was a sidewinding, slightly downhill final putt to sew up his first trip to Augusta National. The putt tracked perfectly and finished just short, but he picked up the 20 points he needed to win his age-group title.
“I am bad at putting, but I am good at two-putting,” said Holden, who was the highest scorer in the putting category on Saturday – just like he was a year ago at the regional qualifier at Pebble Beach.
“I guess I am a good pressure putter.”

While the putter was key for Holden, Abigail Lin set up her National Finals berth with a strong start in the drive skill. Lin came close to advancing to the National Finals in the Girls 7-9 age group a few years ago when she was runner-up at The Olympic Club. At Chambers Bay, in her fourth appearance in Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying, Lin, of Folsom, Calif., finally finished off her quest winning the Girls 14-15 division.
“It was the first time I hit all three drives in (the grid),” said Lin. “That was really good, actually. It gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of the competition.”
Arno Wehle, of San Jose, Calif., won the Boys 12-13 age group. Wehle had an interesting introduction to golf: He wanted to take it up after dominating in Wii Sports video-game golf.
I stayed strong, that is all I can describe. I was hungry to win this tournament. I have been waiting for a long time to get this far, and I am really proud of myself.

“I begged (my parents) for six months to try golf, and they finally gave in,” said Wehle. “I think it was my dad, because he always wanted to play golf but can’t because he has a bad back.”
Wehle said he was most proud of “staying calm because there is a lot of adrenaline” during his performance at Chambers Bay.
If a violin can be heard somewhere on the grounds of Augusta National in April, chances are it is Niuniu Zhao, of Woodinville, Wash., warming up for the Girls 12-13 competition.
“When I practice (music), I use a metronome,” Zhao said. “So I was thinking, ‘I play violin but I also play golf, so there are many similarities that overlap.’
“Before tournaments, I play ‘Humoresque’ by Dvorak.”
It worked at Chambers Bay. Zhao won the chipping competition with 55 points and claimed her age-group title by six points, scoring her first Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals berth just four years after taking up the sport with her family.

As Emery Johnson’s family began excitedly tabulating scores late in the Boys 10-11 competition on Saturday, thinking Johnson might go on to win his age group, the golfer from Sandy, Utah, remained stoic.
He still remembered the anguish of losing by one point at the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Pebble Beach in 2021.
“I was just so mad,” Johnson said.
In the end, Johnson didn’t have to worry about a competitor sinking a 30-foot putt to beat him this time around – as was the case two years ago – because he built too big of a lead. He scored 141 points and won his age group by a 21-point margin.

“It feels so good to finally go,” he said.
The worst of the rain and wind hit as Ruba Jampa, of San Mateo, Calif., was finishing up her impressive showing in the chipping (55 points) and putting (60 points) competitions to claim the Girls 10-11 age group title.
“It wasn’t too much of a challenge, really,” Jampa said. “I would take a practice swing, then wipe my hands down.”
Jampa scored 141 points, then hoped her prize traveling home would be a double chocolate cake, courtesy of her father.
“I stayed strong, that is all I can describe,” Jampa said. “I was hungry to win this tournament. I have been waiting for a long time to get this far, and I am really proud of myself.”
Max Soterakopoulos, of Everett, Wash., won the Boys 7-9 age group and Sienna Si, of Pleasanton, Calif., captured the Girls 7-9 age division.

About the Finalists
Connor Holden, 13, of Canby, Ore., won the Boys 14-15 age division with 166 total points after finishing first in both the chipping and putting skills, earning his first trip to the National Finals. A year ago, Holden, whose favorite golfer is Jordan Spieth, advanced to the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Pebble Beach, where he won the putting competition. He participated in the 2023 IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships and had a big summer in Oregon Junior Golf by winning four majors and the Tournament of Champions.

In the Girls 14-15 division, Abigail Lin of Folsom, Calif., advanced to the National Finals for the first time in four Drive, Chip and Putt regional appearances. She won the AJGA Mercy Health Foundation Junior All-Star tournament this summer in Ohio. Lin, 15, is a sophomore at Vista del Lago High School and is the No. 1 golfer on her high school team. Her favorite player is Lydia Ko.

Arno Wehle, 12, is a first-time National Finalist after winning the Boys 12-13 age group title with 157 points. He recorded his career-low tournament round (66) at the 2023 IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships in July at Morgan Run Resort. Wehle, of San Jose, Calif., names Jack Nicklaus as his favorite golfer.

Niuniu Zhao won the Girls 12-13 division with 139 total points, which included a first-place finish in the chipping skill, to earn her first trip to the National Finals. She was runner-up in the same division at the Pebble Beach regional in 2022. Zhao, 13, of Woodinville, Wash., was the second-youngest qualifier at the 74th U.S. Girls Junior in Colorado this past summer in what was her first USGA championship appearance. Her favorite golfer is Lydia Ko.

Soterakopoulos participated in the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in August in North Carolina. At 6 years old, he became the youngest person ever to record a hole-in-one at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett. His favorite golfer is Rory McIlroy.

In the Girls 7-9 age division, Sienna Si of Pleasanton, Calif., scored 123 total points to earn her first trip to the National Finals. In 2022, she placed third in the same division at the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at Pebble Beach. Si participated in the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in August in North Carolina. The 9-year-old’s favorite player is Rose Zhang.
