JUPITER, Fla. – Jolie Pastorick already felt pressure as she prepared for her fifth Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier on Sunday at The Bear’s Club. In each of her four previous attempts, she was unable to reach the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club. Three years ago, she missed by a single agonizing point.
But Pastorick felt a different pressure early last week – the dropping barometric pressure from approaching Hurricane Ian, which forced her family to evacuate their home in Sarasota, Fla. So much for practicing her drives, chips and putts.
“It’s been a lot of emotions because we had to leave our home on Monday because of the hurricane,” Pastorick said. “It impacted my preparation because there was no way to practice. We kept having to switch hotels. It was a lot of movement for our family.”
There was a lot of motivation because I was so close to being able to go to Augusta that it just really pushed me.

Pastorick was forced to visit the PGA Tour Superstore in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to chip and putt. But she couldn’t hit drives, and that worried her.
“She was super nervous about her driving,” said her father, Dirk.
Sure enough, Pastorick’s first drive Sunday went out of bounds – by a foot.
But she crushed her next two drives. Then she nearly holed two chips. Then she made her second putt and left her third putt an inch from the hole.
Just like that, Pastorick finally earned her first trip to Augusta National, winning the Girls 14-15 division with 143 points.
“It’s very exciting because this is my fifth regional, and I worked so hard for this,” Pastorick said. “There was a lot of motivation because I was so close to being able to go to Augusta that it just really pushed me.”

Pastorick wasn’t the only golfer who found redemption Sunday. Leah Gram of Jupiter, Fla., finished second at last year’s regional qualifier but this time, she used her prodigious driving to build a lead and win the Girls 12-13 division with 129 points. She earned 52 points with her driver even though she was nervous.
“When I was hitting the driver, my hands were shaking,” Gram said. “Driving is my favorite skill because I can hit the ball far. I was able to calm down and just play my own game and not worry about anyone else.”
Lily Wachter of St. Augustine, Fla., also improved from a runner-up showing in last year’s regional to win the Girls 10-11 division with 148 total points.
Luke Parsons of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., was the lone player Sunday to earn a second trip to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, which will be played April 2, 2023. He placed first in driving, tied for fourth in chipping and tied for second in putting to finish with 156 points. He finished third in his first trip to Augusta National four years ago.
“This really proves I’m still a really good player, and I can do great things,” Parsons said. “I didn’t do my best (at Augusta National in 2018), but I still walked away with some hardware.”
Among those to earn their first trip to the National Finals were Larissa Wheelless of Miami in the Girls 7-9 division, Alfred Carmenate of Miami in the Boys 7-9 division, Daniel Barcenas of Weston, Fla., in the Boys 10-11 division and Carson Perry of Port Orange, Fla., in the Boys 12-13 division.

Perry is the son of Rod Perry, who twice has been named PGA Professional of the Year. Perry almost enjoyed the rare father double as his daughter, Vanessa, barely lost to Pastorick in the Girls 14-15 division.
What makes their story more remarkable is that, like Pastorick, the Perry children were unable to practice this week because Hurricane Ian drenched the Daytona Beach area as it made its way across Florida.
When Carson Perry was asked what worked for him, he said, “Quitting golf for a week because of the hurricane. It works.”

Kinley Mills, a 10-year-old from Fort Myers, Fla., didn’t win a medal Sunday, but inspired many with her performance on Sunday, showing up after her town bore the brunt of Hurricane Ian’s wrath when it made landfall in the U.S.
The family had to abandon their first-floor condo – fortunately, an out-of-town neighbor allowed them to use their third-floor condo – and lost both of their cars to the storm. Mills’ father, Mike, said there was no thought of not coming to the regional qualifier once a friend loaned the family a car because there are no rental cars available in Fort Myers.
“Golf takes my mind off what’s going on at home,” Kinley Mills said. “I was really glad to be here. I just want to help my family deal with everything.”

About the Finalists
Larissa Wheelless of Miami compiled the most points across all three skills to earn 140 total points and win the Girls 7-9 division by 47 points.
Her favorite golfer is Bryson DeChambeau because “his drives go a long way.” Not surprisingly, driving is her favorite skill.
“The chip-in was really nice,” she added. “But I was really nervous.”

In the Boys 7-9 division, Alfred Carmenate of Miami relied on his short game to carry him to a winning score of 135 points. He earned the most points in his division in chipping (55) and tied for the most in putting (60). He likes putting because “it’s really easy – for me.”
Carmenate, 8, has been playing golf for four years and learned the game from his father, Eliadates. Carmenate, along with Girls 7-9 age-group winner Larissa Wheelless, trains at the Jim McLean School in Miami.

Lily Wachter, 10, of St. Augustine, Fla., won the driving competition with 33 points and finished tied for the most points in chipping (60) and putting (55) on her way to winning the Girls 10-11 age-group title. She likes chipping the most, but last year’s runner-up finish in the regional qualifier pushed Wachter to work on her putting.
Wachter, whose favorite golfer is Jessica Korda, likes golf “because it’s fun and I get to spend time with my family.” Her father (and caddie), Kevin, works in golf construction.

Daniel Barcenas, of Weston, Fla., holed his putts from 6 and 30 feet on his way to winning the putting skill as well as the Boys 10-11 age-group title.
Barcenas said his favorite golfer is Rory McIlroy “because my swing is kind of like his.” He likes driving because he likes hitting it far. Barcenas, who competed at the regional qualifier wearing a shirt with a popsicle pattern, has a closet full of golf clothes and wants to become a pro golfer when he grows up.
“I practice every day,” he said. “I’ve always watched the Masters. It’s amazing to be there. It was my dream. This was my first try, but I was confident I could win.”

Leah Gram, 12, of Jupiter, Fla., finished second at Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying a year ago before coming back to win the Girls 12-13 age-division title this year.
“I didn’t think I won,” she said. “My putting and chipping was so-so today, but I won because of my driving. I like driving because I can hit it far.”
Gram began playing golf five years ago when her family moved from New York to Jupiter. Her father, Peter Andersson, played golf growing up in Sweden and played against Swedish stars Henrik Stenson and Peter Hanson.

Carson Perry, 11, of Port Orange, Fla., won the Boys 12-13 division by a single point. His father, Rod Perry, is a two-time PGA Professional of the Year and Carson plays left-handed like his dad, even though both are naturally right-handed.
“He’s always giving me advice and making me better,” Carson said of his dad. “My dad means a lot to me.”
Carson’s sister, Vanessa, finished second in the Girls 14-15 division.

Jolie Pastorick, of Sarasota, Fla., tied for second in the chipping competition (50) and was solo second in the putting competition (60) on her way to winning Girls 14-15 age-group honors. This was her fifth trip to Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifying, but the first time she has advanced to the National Finals.
“I really focused on my chipping,” Pastorick said of what she learned in her first four trips to regional qualifying. “I looked at all my scores and I felt chipping was my weakness.”
Pastorick started playing golf after watching the Netflix documentary “The Short Game.”

Luke Parsons, 13, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., led his division by scoring 56 points in the driving skill and was second in putting with 55 points. He also qualified for the National Finals in 2018 but will take a slightly different approach this time.
“Driving down Magnolia Lane, I wasn’t really paying attention,” he said. “I was focusing on practicing and getting a good warmup. This time I will try to enjoy the experience a little more.”
Parsons attends school through an online academy and said he plays about 20 tournaments a year on the South Florida PGA Junior Medalist Tour.
