LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A cool, dark morning did little to diminish the warm, bright smiles of the 95 boys and girls who arrived on the grounds of Valhalla Golf Club on Sunday, eager for the opportunity to earn one of eight available spots in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on April 6, 2025.
The dew glistened across the bluegrass as dozens of junior golfers along with their family members stepped up to the registration tent as early as 7 a.m. A sign positioned just to the side of the tent reminded competitors that “The Road to Augusta National Starts Here.”
For Bardstown, Ky., native, Seth Greenwell, that starting point is practically in his own backyard. Greenwell and his parents drove less than an hour from Bardstown to Valhalla, a golf course he also visited earlier this summer for the 106th PGA Championship.
This time, however, he felt a different kind of excitement. This time, he was the one competing.

“This was the biggest stage I’ve ever competed on, and it’s the perfect golf course,” Greenwell said.
A big stage deserves a big drive, and Greenwell delivered a 280-yarder on his second attempt. It was the highest-scoring drive in the Boys 14-15 division and propelled him to the top of his age group by a 40-point margin, where he stayed all day. This will be his first visit to Augusta National Golf Club.
Ella June Hannant of Pikeville, N.C., secured a second trip down Magnolia Lane by winning the Girls 14-15 division. Hannant is excited to be older and wiser when she returns next April.
“It was an amazing experience the first time I competed at Augusta National, but I was really young, so I am excited to go back and enjoy the whole experience again,” said Hannant, who won the Girls 7-9 division at the National Finals in 2018. “I think I will be able to enjoy it a little more now.”
This was the biggest stage I’ve ever competed on, and it’s the perfect golf course.

Hudson Justus will also return to the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals for the second time in his young career after winning the Boys 12-13 division in the home state of his favorite player, Justin Thomas. Justus, a Gainesville, Ga., native, said he is excited to putt on Augusta National’s 18th green again, with the leaderboard and fans behind him. Even his friends and family members who were following along back home were hoping he’d punch his ticket and stand on the 18th green for the second time.
“My grandparents and kids from my school (were keeping up today),” Justus said. “One of the kids from my school told me good luck and that he better see me (make the National Finals).”
Justus planned to celebrate his National Finals berth with a tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum in downtown Louisville, while Taylor Ross, the Noblesville, Ind., native who won the Girls 12-13 division, planned to celebrate with ice cream.
Ross’ scorecard was well-rounded, as she performed well in each of the three skill competitions even though she did not win a medal in any single discipline. Her consistency paid off, earning her the win by just three points.

The Boys 10-11 division winner, Chaz Zitzner, of Springfield, Ohio, is “less nervous” when he plays with friends. Luckily for him, he warmed up and competed with two hometown friends at the regional qualifier on Sunday.
“We play pretty much every week together on the same local tour (in Ohio),” Zitzner said. “Usually, I’m less nervous playing with them, but I do want to beat them. We’re all really competitive.”
If he was nervous, he didn’t show it. Zitzner won both the driving and putting skill competitions.
Far from nervous, Penelope Philip, from Brentwood, Tenn., hit the excitement ceiling after winning the Girls 10-11 division Sunday. She took the top spot by an impressive 14 points and called it one of the happiest days of her life, saying that it even felt like she “won the lottery” because she simply loves the game of golf.
“I tried out a lot of different sports and golf was my favorite,” Philip said. “The older I got, the more I got into it. I started practicing more and then got into some tournaments. I feel like golf is special.”
The third time was the charm for Philip, as this marked her third attempt at qualifying for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. That’s a testament to her dedication and love for the game.

Boys 7-9 division winner Kosei(Ko) Imai, who is nicknamed “little pro,” is headed to Augusta National on just his second attempt to qualify for the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.
“In my first golf tournament, my friends called me ‘little pro’ because I was, I guess, shooting the low score in the tournament,” Imai said. “So, that is kind of my nickname now.”
Imai, a Powell, Ohio, native, who admires professional golfer Scottie Scheffler, plans to enjoy the experience and spend time with his friends and family at Augusta National next April. He even has a fist pump like a professional, too, which he displayed for the patrons after winning the chipping skill and then winning his age division by 24 points at the regional qualifier on Sunday.
From one “little pro” to another, Perri Harris of Bowling Green, Ky., won every skill challenge in the Girls 7-9 division, cruising to a 39-point margin of victory. She credits her grandfather, Kenny Perry, a former PGA Tour player and current PGA Tour Champions player, for encouraging her on the golf course.

“He helped me get to this point,” Harris said after naming him as her favorite professional golfer. Until the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals on April 6, she is “going to work hard every day.”

About the Finalists
Seth Greenwell of Bardstown, Ky., winner of the Boys 14-15 division, said the PGA Tour player who inspires him the most is Akshay Bhatia because he is young and believes in himself.
Greenwell added that he appreciates his parents for helping him get to this point in his golf career, mentioning that his father gave him a putter at just a couple days old and that he was riding around in a golf cart at just a few months old.

Playing golf runs in the family for Girls 14-15 division winner Ella June Hannant of Pikeville, N.C. Hannant’s older sister, Karsyn Laine Roberts, plays college golf at East Carolina University, and her younger sister, Zada Lee Hannant, also plays golf.
In addition to golf, Hannant enjoys throwing discus and javelin, sports her father introduced to her to help her with her strength and explosiveness on the golf course. She liked them so much that she has even competed in some discus and javelin tournaments.

Boys 12-13 division winner Hudson Justus from Gainesville, Ga., was first inspired to play golf after watching “The Short Game,” a Netflix documentary that followed a group of 7- and 8-year-old golfers on their journey to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship in 2012.

Taylor Ross of Noblesville, Ind., winner of the Girls 12-13 division, enjoys playing golf with her father. She said the two of them play golf together “all the time,” and that he will caddie for her at the National Finals next April.

Chaz Zitzner of Springfield, Ohio, knew he had to make putts to advance to the National Finals in the Boys 10-11 division, and make putts he did. He tied Kengo Imai for the top spot in that skill competition with 65 points and medaled in the drive skill with 47 points. When asked how he handled that pressure in the regional qualifier, his answer was as simple as this: “I make it, or I don’t go.”

Penelope Philip, of Brentwood, Tenn., won the chipping competition at the Valhalla regional qualifier with a score of 55 points, which was 15 more points than the next-closest competitor.
What Philip, the overall winner in the Girls 10-11 division, didn’t know at the time was that she chipped from the same spot at No. 18 from which PGA Tour player Xander Schauffele chipped to win the 106th PGA Championship.
When Philip learned that, she said, “That is very special. I feel really special and excited.”

Brothers Kosei(Ko) Imai and Kengo Imai of Powell, Ohio, both competed at the Valhalla regional qualifier. Kosei(Ko) won the Boys 7-9 division by a 39-point margin while Kengo earned the first alternate spot out of the Boys 10-11 division.
The brothers enjoy golfing together and challenging each other.

Perri Harris, a Bowling Green, Ky., native who won all three of the skill competitions in the Girls 7-9 division at the Valhalla regional qualifier, joked to the media that her dad and her grandfather, former PGA Tour player and current PGA Tour Champions player Kenny Perry, could have a putt-off to decide who will be on her bag at the National Finals next April. That, however, was after she already said the honor would go to her dad.
When asked about what she was going to do to celebrate punching her ticket, that answer was simple: “Chill.”
