CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It appeared Jake Sheffield might come up short yet again in Drive, Chip and Putt competition on Saturday. In seven previous tries, Sheffield has never advanced to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club.
The teenager from Knoxville, Tenn., was in fifth place in the Boys 14-15 age division entering the final putting portion of the skills competition. Heading to the 18th green at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, Sheffield had no real path to victory in the regional qualifier.
Or did he?
In a stunning turn of fortune, Sheffield made all three of his putts from distances of 6, 15, and 30 feet for a perfect score and rallied to a one-point victory, finally earning his trip to the iconic home of the Masters Tournament.
“Golf is just a game of inches sometimes,” Sheffield said. “Scoring 75 on putting is amazing, but I still didn’t think it was going to be enough to win.”
Nor did his father.
“I saw him beat himself up on the chipping portion,” added Kevin Sheffield. “On his very first chip he didn’t even hit it on the green and he kind of mentally looked out of it. His third chip hit the pin, but I looked at the totals and thought to myself, ‘He’s just too far out. There is no way he can come back because these other kids are really solid.’ There was no chance.”

Jake Sheffield’s clutch accomplishment came against a backdrop of massive sets of bleachers put in place for the upcoming Presidents Cup, to be played at Quail Hollow less than two weeks after the Drive, Chip and Putt regional concluded.
“When I am watching it on TV I can say, ‘I made a putt there,’” Sheffield said.
It was fun that I was able to watch her play [at Augusta], and it definitely made me push myself because, obviously, I wanted to be able to do the same thing.
Sheffield’s comeback wasn’t the only drama of the day as Narah Hope Kim of Duluth, Ga., emerged from a playoff to win the Girls 12-13 age division. Kim and Victoria Davis of Holly Springs, N.C., were tied at 127 points after completing all three skills so the two headed back to the course for a single-shot showdown in each of the drive, chip and putt categories to determine the winner.
“I was really nervous,” Kim said. “After the (playoff) drive I was shaking and while I was putting, I was shaking because I was so nervous and scared. But it was really fun. I took some really deep breaths because if I didn’t, I would probably start panicking.”

Kim was one of three golfers from Georgia to advance to the National Finals, to be played April 2, 2023 at Augusta National, in a regional that included 96 competitors from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Among the Georgians moving on were Hudson Justus of Gainesville, Ga., in the Boys 10-11 division and Grace Outhavong of Hampton, Ga., in the Girls 14-15 age group.
“Going to Augusta I’m going to feel just like a PGA Tour player, playing on a course where they play,” Justus said.
Another outstanding performance came from Slater Meade of North Wilkesboro, N.C., who finished in the top three in all categories in the Boys 12-13 division to record 164 points, the most of any competitor in the field.
And there was truly some clutch play from the young competitors, like 8-year-old Knox Mason of Portland, Tenn., who sank his final 30-foot putt to advance to the National Finals.
“To drain that putt to win in the driving rain was clutch,” Chris Mason said of his son Knox, who edged Scout Nettles of Mount Pleasant, S.C., by one point in the Boys 7-9 division.

Minlin Ou of Shelby, N.C., won the Girls 7-9 division by 32 points after excelling in the putting skill and Ada Inderlied of Virginia Beach, Va., topped the Girls 10-11 division also on the strength of her putter.
Four-time Presidents Cup member and former PGA Tour star Kenny Perry made the seven-hour trip from Franklin, Ky.,to cheer for his grandson Rowdy Harris in the Boys 12-13 age division. Perry has some history at Augusta National, having finished runner-up at the 2009 Masters after a three-way playoff.
“I think these kids who advanced are going to feel the magic at Augusta when they walk on property,” Perry said. “Once they drive down Magnolia Lane – at first it won’t hit them – but once they see all the past champions come out and greet them, they will realize the gravity of the event.”
Upwards of 60 volunteers from Quail Hollow Club and staffers from the Carolinas Section of the PGA helped stage a challenging day of golf, which included some heavy rain.
Quail Hollow annually hosts the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship and was the site of the 2017 PGA Championship. Drive, Chip and Putt participants got a little taste of the famed Green Mile, the nickname given to Quail Hollow’s three treacherous closing holes, as the driving skill was staged on the 16th hole and the putting competition took place on the 18th green. Both were framed by grandstands that would soon be filled by thousands of fans for the upcoming Presidents Cup competition.
“For these kids to get to come out and compete two weeks before the Presidents Cup is a special treat, and to actually compete on the Green Mile, trying to simulate that putt Justin Thomas had to win the 2017 PGA Championship here is fabulous,” said Jeff Abbot, executive director of the Carolinas PGA.
“Augusta National Golf Club, the USGA and PGA of America really try to bring these regional championships to a site that has hosted a major and this is our second year here at Quail Hollow,” Abbot added. “There is 700,000 square feet of build-out here and it’s a city amongst itself. These kids to get a neat experience, to see what it would feel like playing in a Presidents Cup with all the grandstands up is amazing.”

About the Finalists
Putting isn’t normally 8-year-old Minlin Ou’s strong suit, but the Shelby, N.C., golfer scored a nearly perfect 70 points on the 18th green at Quail Hollow to advance in the Girls 7-9 division. Ou woke up to her favorite breakfast of waffles with chocolate syrup then slept through the hour drive from her hometown to Quail Hollow before scoring 127 points across all three skills. Her favorite professional golfer is Rory McIlroy.

In what was the closest competition of the day, three points separated the top three spots in the Boys 7-9 division with Knox Mason of Portland, Tenn., advancing to the National Finals. Mason plays out of PGA Tour veteran Kenny Perry’s Country Creek Golf Course, which is actually across the Tennessee border in Kentucky. Mason is looking forward to seeing the “colors” of Augusta National.

Ada Inderlied of Virginia Beach, Va., who won the Girls 10-11 division, lives just five minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. While she likes the beach, she said she practices golf six days a week. Inderlied didn’t mind the rainy weather during the Drive, Chip and Putt regional, saying she’s a fan of “adventure” when it comes to the golf course. Her favorite golfer is Jordan Spieth, and if she met the 2015 Masters champion at Augusta, she would ask him to sign her hat.

Hudson Justus was a spectator at the 2022 Masters. The 10-year-old from Gainesville, Ga., will return to Augusta National this spring as a competitor after winning the Boys 10-11 age division. Justus missed advancing from the Quail Hollow regional last year after finishing second in the Boys 10-11 age division. This time around, Justus didn’t mind the poor weather, saying his only career albatross came in rainy conditions during a junior golf tournament.

Matching clothes and a good-luck charm were enough to get Narah Hope Kim through a playoff in the Girls 12-13 division. Kim and her father both wore pink shirts and grey shorts, though they don’t plan a repeat of wardrobe matching at Augusta National. The good luck charm was a miniature 4-pound dog by the name of Tiger Woods, who kept fairly quiet during the event. Kim gave up playing the cello and dance a few years ago to focus solely on golf.

Slater Meade made two of three putts to score 70 points on the green in the Boys 12-13 division. Meade plays baseball and basketball and also hunts. “I like to hunt deer and turkey, too,” he said. Speaking of hunting, Meade’s father Bradley missed the regional qualifier while hunting moose and caribou in the Northwest Territory of Canada, but mom was on hand to cheer on her son.

Grace Outhavong of Hampton, Ga., has advanced to a Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier three years in a row, and finally moved on from Quail Hollow in her final attempt as a 15-year-old. She made her 15- and 30-foot putts to help secure her age-division title. Soubanh Outhavong accompanies his daughter to all tournaments and is her biggest fan. “It’s going to be amazing to see her name on the leader board at Augusta.”

Knoxville, Tenn., resident Jake Sheffield is a huge University of Tennessee football fan. The 14-year-old once made nine birdies in a round of golf and named Rickie Fowler as his favorite professional golfer. Sheffield advanced to a Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier once before when he was 7 years old but did not make the National Finals.
