A blustery day at TPC Deere Run tested the patience and the skillset of each of the eight National Finalists to emerge from the regional qualifier. But by the end of the day, they were blown away by the opportunity awaiting them.
SILVIS, Ill. – Almost every competitor has a moment in his or her quest for a title when the odds seem small. Those who succeed overcome those odds, and that was the case Sunday at TPC Deere Run, site of a Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier for the second year.
Sometimes those odds are established well before the competition. So it was for 12-year-old Chloe Lee of Plainfield, Ill. She had advanced to the regional qualifier just before school started but shortly after, suffered a broken middle finger on her left hand when a flying football jammed it during gym class.
Lee went five weeks without a club in her hand, and only began to swing a driver a week before the regional. Until then, she was unsure if she could play. Lee, however, captured the Girls 12-13 division title and secured a berth in the 2025 National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club. She won her age division by a five-point margin, and she earned 39 of her 110 total points by driving down Deere Run’s 10th fairway, into the teeth of a 28-mph gale, with her brother Evan’s driver.
“I couldn’t swing 100 percent, or I’d risk breaking the finger again,” Lee said. “So I swung about 70 percent. And I hit lower drives with his driver.”
That kept her drives – the last of which went just over 200 yards – in bounds.

The wind played havoc all day, toppling a tent, flipping the awards table and preying on the frazzled nerves of parents and participants alike. But as Lee showed, the eight players who made it to the National Finals found a way to either negate the wind or use it to their advantage.
For instance, Jack Kemper of Winnetka, Ill., captured the Boys 12-13 division after earning 45 points for three drives in the fairway. In that category, he outscored all but one of his 14 opponents.
“You had to hit a lower shot,” said Kemper, who knew, as a shorter hitter, that the odds were against him and that he needed to use strategy to advance.
Kemper’s 127-point total left him one point ahead of William Comiskey of Hinsdale, Ill., who had made the 2023 National Finals. Kemper won the age-group title not only because of his driving, but also because of his last putt – barely.

“It was right on the 15-point line,” said Kemper, the great-great nephew of James Kemper, who created Kemper Lakes Golf Club and co-founded the KemperSports organization that runs golf courses and clubs throughout the country. “It was literally a centimeter away from me not going to Augusta.”
That was a close battle, but the Boys 7-9 division was closer, going to the third putt of a playoff before 8-year-old Joshua Hooper of Wildwood, Mo., edged Weston Law of Columbus, Wis., by rolling his final putt within a foot of the hole. Both players had tied at 109 points.
“It was nerve-wracking,” Hooper said, and the nodding heads of the 13 family members rooting him on endorsed that notion. “I was nervous and excited when I won.”
Brielle Downer’s win in the Girls 7-9 competition opened the day’s proceedings with a flourish. While she averaged about 150 yards with her driver and led her group in that skill, her 114-point total and 40-point victory was largely because of her putting.
“It’s really good when I get the tempo,” Downer, from Lockport, Ill., said. “I’ve had lots of birdies and eagles – and one albatross.”

Brooklynn Conard of Urbandale, Iowa, also displayed superb putting. She sank her 15-footer and came close from six and 30 feet to win the Girls 10-11 competition, piling up 60 of her 107 points in putting to advance to the National Finals on her fourth attempt.
“I was really excited, because the last two times I did Drive, Chip and Putt, I made the 15-footer,” Conard said. “They’re like my best friends now.”
Hudson Hodge of Clarendon Hills, Ill., had only gotten to the subregional level in his first three attempts but pushed through this time, dominating chipping en route to winning the Boys 10-11 division.
“My key was not getting nervous and keeping your tempo,” Hodge said. “Now I’ve got to keep working hard.”

Abigail Henriksen of DeForest, Wis., started the competition by hitting her first tee shot off the grid, but she rallied quickly, hitting a pair of drives over 220 yards. She then piled up 60 points in putting to make up a 21-point deficit after a so-so chipping round and secured her spot in the Girls 14-15 division at the 2025 National Finals.
“This means a lot after doing it for so long and not getting there,” said Henriksen, 15. “This is so much sweeter, being the last year. I’m grateful for the opportunity. I love watching the Masters. It seems like an amazing place.”
Perhaps Jared Romano of Darien, Wis., was the most excited of all about advancing. He dominated the chipping category in the Boys 14-15 division to win in his last year of eligibility.
“I can’t even describe it,” Romano said. “It’s really exciting. Going to Augusta, my last chance, means more than winning tournaments to me. I’m looking forward to the early morning at the range. I can’t even describe it. I’ll tell you when I get there!”
One of Lockport, Ill., resident Brielle Downer’s best friends is Eloise Fetzer, formerly of La Grange, Ill., and a National Finalist in 2022. Now living in South Carolina, Fetzer won the Girls 10-11 division at the Golf Club of Tennessee last month to qualify for the 2025 National Finals.
Downer won the Girls 7-9 division at TPC Deere Run.
“I’m excited to qualify, and my friend Eloise made it to Augusta National so I’m excited to see her,” said Downer, 8. “That’s really cool. And I’m excited to compete."

Joshua Hooper of Wildwood, Mo., has a putting routine that is a bit like Keegan Bradley’s, but Hooper learned it from his father, Joshua Hooper Sr.
Young Joshua, who won the Boys 7-9 division, says it works for dad, too.
“I’m looking forward to putting on the 18th green,” said the 8-year-old Hooper. “One of my favorite golfers is Tiger Woods because he won all those Masters on the 18th green.”

Left-handed player Brooklynn Conard, of Urbandale, Iowa, won the Girls 10-11 division. Interestingly, she was a right-handed golfer for one day. The first time her dad saw her swing, when she was 4 ½ years old, he said, “Oh no, you’re a lefty.” She has been ever since.
“I just liked being here,” Conard, 10, said of the regional. “At first, I was super-duper-ooper nervous, but once I got done, it was, ‘OK, I got it over with.’ I try to focus just on what I’m supposed to do, and every now and then, I’ll just go, ‘Shake it off!’ Now that I got this far, I’m just going to play my best.”

Hudson Hodge, of Clarendon Hills, Ill., is already a world traveler in golf. Aside from local Illinois Junior Golf Association tournaments, he’s played in U.S. Kids Golf tournaments, including at Pinehurst, N.C., and Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. He’s a friend of fellow qualifier Brielle Downer.
“I’m excited about just being there and having the experience,” Hodge, 10, said of his impending visit to Augusta National after winning the Boys 10-11 division.

Chloe Lee of Plainfield, Ill., was a competitive dancer before COVID-19 struck, but she gave that up for golf early in the pandemic. Lee, winner of the Girls 12-13 division, quickly became proficient on the golf course thanks to lessons from LPGA player-turned-teacher Nicole Jeray, who also teaches Brielle Downer.
“I’ve learned to turn through the ball a lot more, and no matter what my score is, I have to be happy with it – I can’t change it,” Lee, 12, said of the biggest lessons Jeray has taught her.

Jack Kemper, 12, of Winnetka, Ill., calls his mother Jamie his “good luck charm” because she has been at previous Drive, Chip and Putt qualifying stages he won, and she drove him across Illinois to TPC Deere Run for the regional qualifier.
“When I saw the wind, I knew if I could get three drives in, that would be really good,” said Jack Kemper, who kept all three drives in bounds on his way to winning the Boys 12-13 division. “I don’t hit it very far, but for the longer hitters, it was hard to keep it in bounds because of the wind. I kept it lower flighted.”

Abigail Henriksen, of DeForest, Wis., made history earlier this summer by becoming the youngest winner of the Wisconsin Women’s Amateur. At 15 years old, she was three years younger than any previous champion since the format switched to stroke play.
She won the Girls 14-15 division at TPC Deere Run.
“I didn’t honestly think I was going to qualify walking off the putting green, but once we added it up, I realized I had 116 points. It didn’t even feel like I broke 100,” Henriksen said. “Glad to get it done.”

Jared Romano, of Darien, Wis., won the Boys 14-15 division. Romano, one of 11 children, said one of his brothers will caddie for him at Augusta National. There may be a competition to decide who gets the bag.
“Coming into the parking lot, I was really nervous,” said Romano, who will be 15 in April. “I was more like thinking, I’m probably not going to win, but I’ll give it my best shot and see what happens. This is the biggest thing of all!”
