In 2014, Akshay Bhatia made his way down Magnolia Lane as a National Finalist in the inaugural Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club.
Ten years later, he stood over his ball in San Antonio, Texas fighting to get back to Augusta National. Only a 6-foot putt stood between him and his Masters debut. He sank his putt, beating Denny McCarthy in a playoff, and earning his first Masters invitation.
“Being here and being the first Drive, Chip and Putt participant in the Masters is really cool,” said Bhatia during his pre-Tournament press conference. “So I’m hoping this can inspire a lot of kids that are having the opportunity to play.”
Bhatia enjoyed playing with fellow lefty Phil Mickelson early in the week. He listened to all the advice the three-time Masters champion had to share.
“I’ve tried to apply some shots that he’s kind of recommended,” said Bhatia. “There’s still a lot for me to learn.”
Bhatia made the cut sitting at T-30 and +3 heading into the weekend. His performance stayed steady through the weekend, finishing T-35 with a final score of 294 (72-75-74-73).
“I haven’t truly understood what’s happening the last couple weeks. Everything about it is amazing. Just the kind of feelings I had of being very important here is awesome,” Bhatia said following his final round. “I think being my first Masters, it’s pretty cool being the last person in. All in all, it was an awesome week. Had a lot of family out there, and it was a special week for a lot of us.”
