KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – One man’s missed opportunity to throw out a first pitch is another man’s treasure.
That’s how the saying goes, right?
Well, at least that was the case for 9-year-old Jack Williams.
Nashville’s own Brandt Snedeker was slated to throw out the first pitch last Friday to open the Triple-A Nashville Sounds’ tilt against the Gwinnett Stripers. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Snedeker was unable to attend, leaving promoters in need of a last-minute replacement.
Enter Williams.
The Tennessee Golf Foundation, which operates Snedeker’s statewide Sneds Tour for junior golfers, called Williams, also of Nashville, and asked if he would like to step up to the mound in Snedeker’s place.
His answer? A quick and resounding yes.

For a few days leading up to the big moment, Williams mixed in pitching practice with his regular golf-training sessions. When the time came, he stood tall on the mound at First Horizon Park and delivered a strike in front of a roaring home crowd.
Two days later, he capped off a memorable weekend by winning the Boys 10-11 title at the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier at the Golf Club of Tennessee.
Does it get much better than that for a 9-year-old?
Williams’ ability to stay focused was key to his success at the regional event. Like a pitcher alone on the mound, he honed in on his routine, shutting out distractions.
“I wasn’t really watching the other players. I was just doing what I know how to do,” Williams said. “The first drive was probably the nerviest shot of the nine shots that I had. I just did my routine and just ripped it down the middle ... I wasn’t nervous for my last putt. I didn’t really know what was happening, because I wasn’t watching very many people.”
His strong performance in the chipping competition played a big role in his win.
Seeing how Augusta National has promoted junior golf is just wonderful. We want to be part of it, and as long as they keep asking us to support it, we’ll continue to do so.

“The first one was pretty good,” Williams said. “The second one, I knew I needed to hit it harder so I hit it harder, and it almost went in. The last one almost went in, too.”
When he’s not practicing his fastball, Williams spends five or six days a week at Nashville’s Harpeth Valley Golf Center, working on every aspect of his game alongside his grandfather, Buddy Harston. Harston, a former professional golfer, competed in nine major championships, including the 2002 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club, two Senior Open Championships and two U.S. Senior Opens. Harston, who was inducted into the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009, gave Williams his first golf lesson when he was just a year-and-a-half old.

“You could tell from the get-go that he just loved to hit it,” Harston said. A standout collegiate baseball player at Lipscomb before transitioning to golf, Harston also enjoyed a long stint as the head coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams at his alma mater.
At age 5, Williams was homeschooled during the pandemic, which allowed him to spend nearly every day practicing golf.
“We would go out, chip and putt and play just about every day, no matter the weather,” Harston said. “The main thing was that we found him a game that he loved. And he does, and that’s why he’s so good at it, because he practices more than anybody. I guarantee you, nobody (his age) practices golf as much as he does.”
Williams’ commitment to his craft has paid off, and this won’t be his first trip to Augusta National. He recalls attending the Masters Tournament “the year Jon Rahm won it.” Seeing Tiger Woods on the hallowed grounds as well as then-Vanderbilt sophomore Gordon Sargent make his Masters debut were unforgettable experiences.
“I used to practice with Gordon (at Vanderbilt Legends Club), and we’d have competitions,” Williams said. “I beat him in chipping and putting two years ago.”

His love for Vanderbilt golf doesn’t stop with Sargent. Williams’ parents—mother, Palmer, and father, Joseph—both earned their undergraduate and law degrees from Vanderbilt. Joseph came to Vandy from Memphis, joining Teach for America after completing his undergraduate degree. His assignment took him to Whites Creek High School in North Nashville, where he, Harston, and the First Tee program helped restart the school’s golf program, which continues to thrive today. Palmer spent her collegiate summers in Mophela, a rural South African village, working with vulnerable children and survivors of the HIV epidemic.
It’s clear that a legacy of service, teaching, and coaching runs deep in the Williams family. Jack has inherited that same passion and drive, and his family will surely be there to support him on the next leg of his golf journey.
This upcoming trip to Augusta National is one they won’t miss. Alongside Jack’s parents and younger brothers—Henry (7) and Teddy (5)— family friend David Ingram, president of The Golf Club of Tennessee will also be cheering for the young man. Ingram, who was on hand to personally award medals to the winners of each discipline at the regional qualifier in Kingston Springs, has watched Jack’s progress with great interest. (Jack’s mother, Palmer, attended Vanderbilt through the prestigious Ingram Scholars Program, a scholarship named in honor of Ingram’s father.)

“Honestly, I’m a little bit jealous,” Ingram said with a smile, reflecting on Jack’s upcoming trip to Augusta. “To see a young man with that type of skill is amazing, and it’s great that he’s coming from this area.”
As the sun set on the regional qualifier, Ingram took a moment to appreciate the importance of Drive, Chip and Putt for the sport of golf and for future generations.
“Seeing how Augusta National has promoted junior golf is just wonderful,” he said. “We want to be part of it, and as long as they keep asking us to support it, we’ll continue to do so. Our members are very supportive of having this event, and we want to keep it going as long as we can.”
Jack Williams’ road to Augusta is sure to be filled with the next chapter of golf memories for a family already deeply entrenched in the sport. And as his dad put it, “I think we’ll probably just soak it in and enjoy the whole experience.”

About the Finalists
Gairat Kaur Kahlon took the road less traveled to Kingston Springs.
The 9-year-old from Mohali, India, made a long journey to compete, flying from her home state of Punjab to the city of Chandigarh, India, to New Delhi to Newark, N.J., before finally landing in Nashville. After traveling 7,690 miles by air, the 23-mile drive from Nashville to the Golf Club of Tennessee felt easy. Kahlon arrived in Middle Tennessee on Sept. 4 and spent the following days practicing at McCabe Golf Course, a 27-hole municipal course in downtown Nashville that once served as McConnell Field, the city’s former airport—quite fitting given her journey to the Girls 7-9 age division title.
When asked what stood out the most from her trip to the United States, Kahlon smiled and said, “The hot chicken at Hattie B’s was really good,” referencing the city’s famous dish.

Shane Strickland, 8, of Aiken, S.C., had a rollercoaster performance in the Boys 7-9 division but ended up victorious. He scored six points with his first drive but hit his next two outside the grid. He was in last place after the chipping round with only 18 total points. However, Strickland staged a comeback by sinking all three putts, totaling 93 points and securing the win by a mere two-point margin.
Strickland looks up to Scottie Scheffler but doesn’t model his game after any PGA Tour pro. “I model my game after myself,” the homeschooled golfer said modestly. He also carried a cross given to him by his coach, Kenny Evenson of Aiken’s Cedar Creek Golf Club, for good luck. “I’ll definitely have this in my pocket again when I play at Augusta National,” Strickland added.

Eloise Fetzer is making her return to Augusta National.
The Charleston, S.C., native first competed there at age 7 and now, three years later, is headed back after winning the Girls 10-11 division. She tied Brady Wolfe with 120 points but won a playoff to earn her ticket to the National Finals.
Though excited to compete again, Fetzer's fondest memory from her first trip to Augusta wasn’t just about the competition. “I remember how special they treated us and how much they cared about us all,” she said.
A four-sport athlete (lacrosse, pickleball, swimming and golf), Fetzer will continue to fine-tune her game at Daniel Island Club in Charleston.

Jack Williams, a Nashville native, felt right at home while clinching the Boys 10-11 division in his own backyard. Williams, who will turn 10 in October, regularly practices at Harpeth Valley Golf Center, though this was his first time playing at the Golf Club of Tennessee.
Williams comes from a family with deep golf roots. His grandfather, Buddy Harston, has competed professionally, served as the head men’s and women’s golf coach at Lipscomb University and taught at Vanderbilt Legends Club for over 20 years. Now, Harston coaches his grandson, passing on his passion for the game.

Carolina Wynns, 13, of Buies Creek, N.C., has only played golf for three years but has already made her mark. In that short time, she recorded her first hole-in-one and now has earned a trip to Augusta National. Despite being known for her impressive driving—her personal best is a 265-yard shot on an uphill par 5—Wynns relied on her short game to win the Girls 12-13 age division. She earned 50 points in the chipping skill, and that was crucial to her 15-point victory.
Wynns sensed golf karma was on her side when she made her first hole-in-one just two weeks earlier during a varsity golf match. Competing for Cape Fear Christian Academy, she holed a 9-iron from 116 yards, one-bouncing it into the hole.

Jason Wong, now 12 and living in Clemmons, N.C., began playing golf as a 6-year-old in Mobile, Ala. He secured his trip to Augusta National by excelling in the chipping and putting portions of the Boys 12-13 competition. His 156-point total left him 17 points ahead of co-silver medalists Simon Myers and Grady Hayes.
Though Wong trailed by 14 points after the driving drive skill, he gained momentum by sinking his first chip and that led him to victory. He plans to celebrate with his friends at Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, N.C.

Victoria Davis, 14, of Cary, N.C., came back with a vengeance after she narrowly missed advancing from regional qualifiers in previous years. After finishing third at last year’s Golf Club of Tennessee regional qualifier and falling in a playoff at Quail Hollow in 2022, Davis dominated this time, sweeping all categories—driving, chipping and putting—to win the Girls 14-15 division.
Davis, who is homeschooled through Liberty University’s online program, dedicates plenty of time to practicing at Keith Hills Golf Club. She won the 2023 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II championship as an eighth grader and also posted a field-leading 6-under-par 66 in the opening round of the 2024 PGA High School Golf National Invitational before tying for 14th overall.

Raymond Rebell, 14, moved from Loomis, Calif., to Maryville, Tenn., two years ago and quickly embraced the Volunteer State’s love for football after attending his first University of Tennessee game at Neyland Stadium.
With accuracy that would rival Volunteer quarterback and fellow West Coaster Nico Iamaleava, Rebell drained his first two putts and scored 20 points on his final attempt to secure the win in the Boys 14-15 division. “I thought I was going to make the last one for a second, but 20 points was good enough,” Rebell said.
Rebell, an eighth grader, will prep next year at Maryville High School located just outside of Knoxville.
