A Four P-U-T-T That'll Help, Not Hurt

Use this acronym to kickstart your prep for a successful season

I bet you read that headline, and did a double-take, didn’t you?!

“Four-putt? How can I learn from a four-putt?! Is this writer crazy?”

Hang on a second, now! We’re not talking about the dreaded four putts on one green sort of thing. We’re sticking with an acronym theme that probably sounds familiar. First, we brought you D-R-I-V-E, then

C-H-I-P, and now we tie a bow on this with the third, four letter phrase: P-U-T-T.

Similar to its two siblings, P-U-T-T can be an anchor for you during the run-up to this year’s Drive, Chip & Putt qualifying season. Whether you’ve got a plan to prepare or still need some help, fear not – we’ve got some help for you with a good ol’ four-P.U.T.T.!

You know the drill – grab a pen, a piece of paper and write these four letters down:

Now, here’s how plugging in P-U-T-T will help you over the next few months:

Purpose. When you’re away from the course for a while, it’s easy to lose your “why” — why do you like golf? Why do you practice? Why do you want to compete in Drive, Chip & Putt or other tournaments? Take a step back and remember what your “golf purpose” is for 2021. Write it down and stash it in your golf bag, pulling it out when you need a reminder.

Uncover. It’s time to do a little detective work! Think about your last year of golf — the good and bad. What was something you were proud of, and what’s something you can work on before the season gets in full-swing mode? Try to focus on three uncovered points to improve and that’ll help you get going this season.

Teach. You know how much you love golf? Now what if you could lend a little bit of that love to someone who has never played the game? Maybe it’s a sibling, parent, grandparent, or friend, but try and find someone you can teach a few tips to over the next couple of months. Remember the gift of golf and how it can bring even the newest players a bundle of joy.

Thank. Everyone gets their start in the game somewhere, and with somebody. Whoever that person was for you, send them a card, give them a call or post a special picture on social media. Let them know how thankful you are for them in helping to kick off your golf journey, and how much they mean to you. There’s never a bad time for a little thankfulness!
