ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – On a quiet Sunday morning at Sea Island Golf Club, not even a slow drizzle could dampen the chorus of excited voices that rang out as the competition began. At each skill, encouraging voices called out messages to participants.
“Great shot!”
“Keep your head up!”
“You’re doing great!”
Volunteers brought the initial encouragement, but the regional qualifier participants brought the finishing fireworks.
Despite the steady rain to start the day, the first two divisions on the pairings sheet got off to fast starts with much excitement. Both the Boys and Girls 7-9 divisions required a putting playoff to determine which young hopefuls would earn a spot at the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club next April.

Joey Wolf, an 8-year-old from Sarasota, Fla., won the Girls 7-9 division in a putt-off with Greta Golden of Jacksonville, Fla. Wolf, at 4 feet tall, said her golf mantra is “tiny but mighty.” Throughout the morning, Wolf’s family, friends and golf coach could be heard cheering her on with that expression. Even the volunteers caught on to the saying throughout the morning. Wolf said the overall encouragement from those around her gave her the confidence she needed to perform well despite the gloomy conditions.
“This morning, I told Joey to not get down on herself after the drive skill and to focus on her strengths – the chipping and putting,” Wolf’s mother, Lissy Skolnick, said.
And that’s exactly what Wolf did. After scoring only 14 points in the drive skill, she went on to secure 30 points in chipping and then win the putting skill with 55 points. Her putter proved to be the difference maker as it also helped her in the tiebreaker, a putt-off from 15 feet with Golden. Both players had finished the day with 99 total points.
When asked what her favorite moment of the day was, Wolf simply replied, “Having my friends be here watching me.” Even with a trip to Augusta National secured, nothing beats the small joys of friendship and the camaraderie the game of golf provides.
Just seeing their enthusiasm for the game is incredible. Drive, Chip and Putt is a wonderful program that builds the game for years to come.

Porter Dover of Miami Beach, Fla., brought more early excitement in the Boys 7-9 division by securing his first trip to Augusta National in a 15-foot putt-off with Oliver Zhang of Orlando, Fla.
Zhang putted first, and his ball came to rest inside the five-point ring. Dover followed and reached the 10-point ring. Immediately, cheers of, “Let’s go!” and “Great job!” were heard around the putting green from his father, volunteers and fellow competitors.
Porter was so shocked as he leaned in to hug his dad in celebration that he said, “This is like when my [older] brother got a hole-in-one, I still can’t believe it.”
In the excitement, Porter shared that his nickname is Porter Pounder, which makes sense as the 9-year-old also won individual honors in the drive skill with 37 points. His three drives traveled 179 yards, 186 yards and 178 yards. As the celebrations continued, he showed everyone at the award ceremony that his hidden talent is breakdancing and demonstrated a flawless headstand with his blue-ribbon medal around his neck, telling his dad from upside down, “We’re going to Augusta!”

Later in the day, the excitement in the Wolf group doubled as close family friend Tobias Gordic-Ronderos of Bradenton, Fla., won the Boys 10-11 division to punch his ticket to the National Finals. Tobias’ mom Daniella Gordic-Ronderos coaches Wolf in golf in addition to her son. The pair play golf together out of The Meadows Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. When Tobias realized they both had qualified, he said, “I am overjoyed we both made it.”
Tobias won the driving (56 points) and chipping (55 points) skills on the way to his overall win with 146 points. When asked who his caddie will be at the National Finals, he was quick to say, “My mom – she’s never been to Augusta National, so it will be special for us both.”
The Gordic-Ronderos and Wolf families will have lots of cheering to do come April, and Tobias and Joey will have a lot of time to practice alongside each other in preparation for the big day at Augusta National.

As for those cheering voices that rang out to start the day? They came from the many volunteers who not only jump-started the excitement for the 95 participants at the Sea Island regional qualifier but helped make those dream-come-true moments possible.
Terry and Regina Bridges, of Sea Island, have been volunteering with Drive, Chip and Putt since the first year it came to the area.
“The best part is meeting the kids and their parents,” Terry said. “Just seeing their enthusiasm for the game is incredible. [Drive, Chip and Putt] is a wonderful program that builds the game for years to come.”
As his wife Regina added, “We love being a part of the regional qualifier because we get to see and meet the kids who will be on our TV come April.”
So, while the Bridges will have to wait a few months to cheer on Sunday’s eight National Finalists again, the competitors will get to work practicing until a new chorus of voices cheers for them on the grounds at Augusta National.

About the Finalists
In the Girls 7-9 division, the smallest competitor, standing at exactly 4 feet tall, won the day. Joey Wolf of Sarasota, Fla., is going to Augusta National for the first time after winning a putting playoff with Greta Golden of Jacksonville, Fla. The almost-9-year-old won the putt skill with 55 points and finished her competition with a final score of 99 points.
Wolf says her mantra is “tiny but mighty.” The phrase echoed around the facilities at Sea Island Golf Club as her family and friends cheered her on, encouraging her prior to each skill with the phrase.

In the Boys 7-9 division, the last man up reigned supreme. Porter Dover of Miami Beach, Fla., prevailed in the second playoff of the day. Dover finished the three skill challenges with 117 total points, the same as Oliver Zhang of Orlando, Fla. The two stepped up to their tiebreaking 15-foot putt with Dover coming in as the underdog. Zhang had earlier won the putt skill for their age group. Zhang pushed his ball past the hole to the 5-point ring, while Dover left his putt in the 10-point ring for the win.
Dover’s nickname is Porter Pounder – convenient as the 9-year-old won the drive skill at Sea Island with drives of 179 yards, 186 yards and 178 yards. Dover said of the regional qualifier, “This is like when my [older] brother got a hole-in-one, I still can’t believe it.”

Dressed head to toe in Masters Green, Bella Simoes of Lake Worth, Fla., looked ready for her first trip to Augusta National Golf Club. In her fifth attempt at reaching the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals, the 11-year-old won the drive skill as well as the overall division .
Simoes has been dreaming of this moment for five years and finally qualified with her strong performance driving the golf ball. Her first two drives fell between the 230- and 240-yard markers, and her final drive landed between the 220- and 230-yard markers.
“I am super excited; this is a dream come true. I have been trying for five years. This will be my first time going [to Augusta National] so I am beyond excited,” said Simoes. “My dad is going to caddie for me at Augusta. He was crying earlier so he might be more excited than me right now.”

In the Boys 10-11 Division, 11-year-old Tobias Gordic-Ronderos is going to Augusta National for the first time after winning his division with a final point total of 146. The Bradenton, Fla., native attributes his win to his mom, Daniella Gordic-Ronderos, who coaches him as well as fellow National Finalist Joey Wolf. It was truly a family affair for the Gordic-Ronderoses on Sunday as Tobias’ older brother Niko also competed and took home third place in the drive skill in the Boys 12-13 division.

In her first regional qualifier appearance, Lucia Romero won the Girls 12-13 division. Romero, of Miami, won the chip skill with 50 points en route to her 138-point total score. This marks Romero’s third year competing in the Drive, Chip and Putt program and the first time she has reached a regional qualifier.
As the scores became final, her father, Carlos Romero, was heard on the phone letting Lucia’s mother know “we did it.” Romero plans to have her dad, who introduced her to the game of golf, caddie for her next spring.
Romero’s favorite golfer is Drive, Chip and Putt alumna Alexa Pano.
“She has been such a good influence [on the game] since she was a kid,” Romero said. “I love her.”
She went on to say that if she ever got the chance to meet Pano, she would tell her, “I love you and your golf game.”

In the Boys 12-13 division, Colton Johnson of Appling, Ga., had two reasons to celebrate at Sea Island. The 13-year-old’s best friend Hudson Justus won the Boys 12-13 division at the Valhalla regional qualifier in Louisville, Ky., on the same day, setting up quite the competition between two best friends next April at Augusta National Golf Club.
“We will definitely be talking about it up until then, but once it starts, we will want to beat each other. Whoever winds up winning will definitely make the other hear about it for the next year,” Johnson said. “We will probably practice together before then. Hudson will probably come down to Georgia a few days before [Drive, Chip and Putt] and we can play at my home course [in Appling].”
Johnson also earned the top spot in the putting skill on Sunday with 65 points en route to his 152-point division-winning total. Johnson noted that his favorite skill is putting because it provides the opportunity to score the most points out of any skill.

Hailey Jung of Johns Creek, Ga., became the second Georgia native alongside Johnson to qualify for the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club. Jung went fourth in her age division and mentioned how stressful it was to wait for the other eight competitors in her age group to finish each of their skills.
“The hardest part of today was checking the results on my phone and refreshing the page every few seconds to see where I was while I waited,” she said.
Jung finished the day with 165 total points. She won the chipping skill with 55 points and tied for first in the putting skill with 65 points.

Jesus Bethencourt of Bonita Springs, Fla., qualified for the National Finals after finishing all three skills with 179 total points. He won the chipping (55 points) and putting (60 points) skills. This was Bethencourt’s second time going through the Drive, Chip, and Putt qualifying process and his first time playing in a regional qualifier.
When asked who would caddie for him next April, Bethencourt quickly said his father, Jesus Alfonso Bethencourt.
“It will mean a lot for my dad to be my caddie at Augusta [National] because he is also my coach and I love him so much,” Bethencourt said.
